ten, should I eat this guy?
His camo is amazing. Better than the military digital.
ETA: note the spines on the shell near the head. This should make him a 'spiny softshell'

Caught another soft shell (SS2), not as big as first one. Still larger than any of the snappers I caught this summer.
Ghost snapper, if you're out there, please come back and swallow my line.

Hell Pecker Yes! There is considerably less meat on one than a snapper, but the meat has a sweeter taste. That's a big ole sow and she'll likely be full of eggs. Scrape them out and fry in bacon grease. You will thank me later.

How would you preserve that shell with the color intact I wonder?

I'm not sure. The shell is very rubbery. I will try though by first exposing it to sunlight (camo side down) then applying a clear coat glazing/varnish if the shell hardens.
That photo doesn't do the prolific beauty of the shell any justice.
The camo is insanely perfect. No way I would ever see it in the water or burrowed down on land, and I have 20/10 vision.

How will I know when the eggs are 'done' when I fry?
Also, I think it's interesting that when you flip a softie over, it becomes immobilized and blood starts to rush to its underside. The undershell becomes flushed and blood vessels become very apparent.
Red ears can be immobilized in the same manner but you can't see any blood rush.
I'm sure you also know that a snapper will right itself when flipped over by using his face and neck muscles.
It amazes me how much I've learned about turtles this summer.

The same way you know when a chicken egg is done. Are you saying you don't know how to fry an egg?
Dammit boy.
To cut that softshell's head off of her 14-inch neck you need to get a hook on a piece of string. She's gonna pull her head in her shell where you can't get to it to cut it off. Hook her through the nose with that hook and pull the string out to stretch it out so you can chop it off. When you are cleaning a softshell you don't have to cut though the bony part on the sides, in between the front and back legs. When you get to that part start cutting towards the top (dorsal) side and come up on top of the shell, onto the soft part until you get past the bone. You can take her apart with a pocketknife with very little cutting if you do it right.
Once you have it quartered up, cut the legs across the bone about an inch or so apart to leave a little piece of bone with meat all the way around it. Should look like a mini-ham, with a piece of bone in the middle. Cook it like this, as the bone is where the best flavor is. When it starts falling off the bone you know it's done.

I don't really like eggs in general.
Because all the turtle eggs I've seen were pretty soft, I figured you meant to fry them whole instead of breaking the shell and frying the yolk. I may have ruined them by frying whole.
Thanks for the cleaning tips, I assumed it would be easier because of the really soft undershell.
If she has eggs, I'll make sure to photo and post them. I'll probably clean her tonight or tomorrow and fry eggs Sat morning. I'm guessing like all eggs, I can refrigerate them without having to worry about spoilage.

I'm assuming these are the eggs. There aren't many:
The softies were definitely easier to clean than the snappers. Tons of meat. They smelled cleaner. All around, I enjoyed cleaning them better than the snappers.

Those yolks are all I've ever seen. That's why I was wondering how to know when they're done.

Man I got in some effin yellow jackets today. Was at a small pond standing in water holding a branch to tie a line on.
Felt something burning my finger, dropped everything and turned to run. In a panic, tripped on cypress knees and fall over what ended up being where the hole in the ground was (noticed later from truck).
How in the hell I only got stung 3 times, I have no idea but thank god cause this was over 3 hours ago and it's still burning like a sum beyotch. Finger, back of leg and inside of arm.
EDIT: I got my newspaper, some lighter fluid and a can of wasp & hornet. Will get their asses before daybreak- AFTER I pick up all my nets/lines.
