well, i gotta tell ya.. that's largest exaggeration i've ever heard, Deac

and roanoke is 504, man.. not 276

and that's actually pretty spot on

Lots of truth in that. And you've got to get away from the "If it's brown, it's down" way of thinking. But you'd be really surprised if you knew just how many huge bucks hide in the most unlikely places in any area with lots of pressure. They're smart and that's why they survive.

are you talking about 276 or 504? Because even though total number of people hunting is down, the number of of licenses issued is pretty steady i believe

i have varying opinions on why this is, none are which are truly valid

and remember, this was supposed to be a,"down", year for us

Depends on whether you are east or west of The Blue Ridge. General rifle season here is only about two weeks. But we've got an early muzzleloader season and we have a late muzzleloader season. The late muzzleloader was and is my favorite, though. Not many people in the woods and the rut still ain't over.

I was thinking more about 276. I've seen lots more monsters in the back country where most hunters wouldn't go than I have in the more accessible areas. I think the pressure may move em back there, too? And on the other hand, I have seen some monsters that hid in the briar patch right by the road. They bed down during the day and don't move til dark. And those areas that don't get much pressure may have more huge bucks, but...they also have a lot of inferior bucks, too. None of em get culled.

I'm from Tazewell County. Big deer in the area for sure. When I moved to Florida and saw my first FL deer I was surprised at the size differences. Then a hunter said that deer as big as the ones in mountains would sink in the swamps. Made sense to me.
