Man, I don't know. They are cool, but they are pretty damn expensive and have a lot more that can go wrong on them compared to your conventional 250 outboard. Plus they can probably only be worked on by a handfull of people in the US due to small distributorship.

I think only people with too much money and not enough sense (i.e. some idiots in Houma) will put these on their fishing boats. True anglers would probably rather have a good old dual or trip 250 set up.

The better power with fewer motors in my mind really outweighs the downside.

You can replace almost 2.5 traditional 250's with each of these. So basically you set two of these on the back of your boat and it is equivalent in power to having 4 or 5 250s and the fuel efficiency is better at that point.

Maintenance wise I am not so sure they are the "special" after all there are a ton of GM mechanics out there.

Your dual or trip 250s will still be 80 miles offshore when a dual 575 is at home...

But do you really need the power of 4 to 5 250's?? A 35 ft boat with trip 250s is still capable of running 60+...only good thing is maybe better fuel consumption.

Also, you can buy two 250s for te price of one 557...it's still a better value to run traditional motors. Most people that currently run triple or quad motors could not justify refitting with two $70,000 motors. And no one who runs offshore will replace two 250s with one of these.

As far as maintenance, yes...tons of GM mechanics...but do you know how much it costs to work on that motor when it's in a Cadillac?? Now think of price, plus the fact it's a custom outboard boat motor...not many GM or outboard mechanics would be willing to mess with that.

Lile I said, they are certainly very cool...and I'm sure they will sell plenty...but I just don't see them as being a cost saver in any way. they will sell to those who have a ton of money that they don't know what to do with.

This is where your argument (not that you are arguing) falls apart.

Cost savings don't really come into play that much when you are looking at $500k fishing boats.

I see your argument and for the most part I agree, but these motors will be bought by people that bought the Yamaha 350 when it came out. They want the biggest, fastest, and most expensive because they can.
