I did this with my '05 F150 a few years ago. I've been pretty happy with the decision.

but I would take the long block to a reputable engine builder to have the lower end rebuilt and heads reconditioned and reassembled and bring back to the shop doing the work...make sure the shop knows and approves of the rebuilder choice and you should be good


Second this...if possible buy new, not remanufactured. Its substantially more money but far more likely to be a success, in my experience.

Where you buy your replacement is the most important decision. Custom builder or OEM crate motor should serve you well.
Budget rebuilders cut way too many corners. Their goal is for it to last for the warranty period.
