Have st aug yard. Meant to spray in oct but life got in the way. Anyhow, is now the time to spray for spring or still early? In south LA.

It's a little early, but isn't going to hurt. Especially if you didn't pre-emerge late fall. The few broadleaves I have will get Trimec for now. I save the metsulfuron (topshot) for battling the buttonweed down the stretch.

I'd say it's the perfect time to spray pre emergent if that's what you meant. Soil temps been above 55 for a couple weeks now. If you mean post emergent then its kinda early but I sprayed a couple days ago cuz I'm impatient. I'll probably end up having to spray again in another couple weeks

Had never heard of top shot and just googled it. Says dollar weed, which I have, and you mentioned buttonweed as well, which goes freaking crazy in my yard.

So this will work for both? It wont hurt st Aug? When should I spray? Already have dollar weed up in some spots

Top Shot is a weaker form of the MSM Turf frequently talked about here. It's metsulfuron, a post emergent broadleaf herbicide.

Bootlegger, I’m a little confused on what is actually a pre/post emergent. I have centipede and sprayed some weed free zone down last week. I also got some Atrizine and wanted to spray that down tomorrow. Is weed free zone a post emergent and Atrizine a pre emergent?

I also want to level the lawn with some sand/top soil mix. Should I wait until the centipede starts to green up? Also I have some spots that look like there is no grass left. Should I seed this area or just get some sod? I haven’t had much luck trying to seed.

I went to a local Nursery in BR Today. Super friendly people. Told me to mix;
Altrazine
Weed Free Zone
Sticker spreader
For St. Aug and Cent. Can spray over the grass and not kill the grass.

WeedFreeZone is a postemergent, and atrazine is both. Wait until the grass is actively growing before covering it with anything, to make sure ya dont smother it out. Take out the weeds competing for nutrition, don't over- fertilize, and the centipede should spread into the bare areas.

Bootlegger. I have some 2,4-D. Will that work for most of my post- emergent broad leaves ? I used to add surfactant but I think the surfactant burns the good grass.

yes

I would use surfactant just cut back your rate. It doesnt take much at all.

What lawn grass do you have? There are much better and safer options than just 2,4-D

Gamecocks22 and Bootlegger thanks for replying. I have St Augustine and broadleaves. Also I discovered some of the dreaded Torpedo grass. Been reading about the Torpedo grass and it is the devil. I have some wiper components and I am going to build a boom to try to wipe the Torpedo as it grows taller. I have some 53.8% Roundup for that. The rate for the 2,4-D mixture is 3 qts per acre and 1 quart of surfactant. Can you recommend a safer rate or product ? Many thanks to y’all.

St Aug is sensitive to 2,4-D. A three way product (like Weedfreezone or better yet Trimec Southern) that uses lower concentrations of 2,4-D and higher concentrations of other dimethylamine salts is typically better. You'll have less collateral damage to your grass.
