Here are a few pics of how mine did sit. I bought some cheap sport rack ones and they move a little. The closeups were before I adjusted them to fit just right.

nice, any need to tie down the bow and stern at interstate speeds?

I turned mine upside down and ratchet strapped it twice to the rack on my SUV, and had a rope on the front and back of the kayak to prevent it from sliding forward or backward. Rode it from Tuscaloosa to Destin with no problem. Then from Destin to Jacksonville (all interstate) and never had any issues. When I would stop, I would check to make sure it hadn't loosened up.

Bourg, I like your setup but one suggestion: Strap to the siderails atop the vehicle. The factory crossbars are really not sturdy enough to handle the wind deflection of hwy speeds, and you could have a catastrophioc failure(picture your yak flying thru someone's window behind you). With the straps locked down to the roof, little danger there.

Unfortunately he no longer has his yak.

Thanks mung. I've thought about that and triple checked to make sure it was tight enough, but not worry since I no longer have it.
Sull, I usually have a tie from the front hooking on my grill to keep it from swaying but I don't really think it's necessary, and I haul arse.

Dang, sorry, I forgot. Regardless, connection to the roof portion is a must. I frequently do not use a front tie down and never had a problem atop my FJ. I put Yakima crossbars on the existing roof rack b/c the factory ones were pathetic.

love the yak already but need a name.

Need to name for the yak? I'd probably name it "The Judge"

My only concern with those

Been there, done that. It is a whole different perspective, though, when you're at eye-level with them.
The two ponds I like fish look like something that should be on swamp people.
