You should have a gun in your house IMO. As the saying goes, "when seconds count, cops are only minutes away." Can't count on them all the time for protection.
They make these in all sizes to keep the guns away from your kid.
...although, familiarizing your child with the gun and safety concerns is probably equally if not more important.
Take one of the NRA classes. Go to a local gun shop and they can tell you when, where, and what one is best for what you're looking for. If you have friends that shoot and you trust, they can teach you a lot too.
A gun isn't something to be scared of once you know how to use it.

I have one of these and was about to recommend that exact one.
Mine has 5 pistols in it under my bed and I don't have to worry about the kids messing with it.

I'm in your exact situation although I probably have a little more experience around firearms. I have never owned a handgun.
I have been asking a few questions of people I know that are similar to yours. This is what I have been told so far...
First of all invest in a gun safe for peace of mind. I like the one at Academy for $100 that scans my finger prints for quick access and its small. I have no real experience with it though.
I was told if I wanted to conceal it get a revolver bc it conceals better. I too am thinking of taking the class.
A single action revolver is a little more complex to shoot. A friend of mind just bought this gun for his son for this reason. The hammer must be pulled back before every shot rather than 6 shots that can be fired continuously.
Research the ammo...specifically self defense rounds. These have me leaning towards a 9mm rather than 22.
I am by no means an expert so don't take any of this as great advice. I'm trying to learn just like you so hopefully it helps some.

So if I were to visit a local gun retailer, what can I expect? What should I be ready to ask? Is it better to visit a chain or local retailer? Is it typical for newbs to walk in off the street to try out some handguns?

What I would suggest is to go to the range with your wife and just rent a few guns and put 50 rounds through each. It's a great way to see what you like and get familiar with multiple handguns. Here in BR, Precision lets women shoot free on weekdays. There might be something like that in your area.
Personally, I would recommend a Springfield XD/XDM or Glock 17/19. It's hard to find a handgun easier to shoot than one of those, nor will you find one more reliable. I personally am a fan of Springfields more than Glocks. Personal preference though.

What state do you live in?
Don't by shy about ignorance. Most shops love helping amateurs out. The internet is a great place to learn about firearms, but walking into a store and asking for help sets the foundation for you.
Tell them exactly what situation you are in and why you want a gun. They will recommend a few based on your preference and then you should try them out.

MS.
The only places that sell guns around here that I'm aware of is Gander Mnt and Academy. The local mom 'n pop went out of business a year ago. So I'm not sure if we have an actual shooting range here or not.

Hmm that's tough then. I definitely would not recommend buying your first gun without shooting it first.

I definitely would not. I just may have to travel a bit to try a few out.

congrats.....a .22 is a great round. My next purchase is a Colt M4 22. You can stock up on ammo and get a flash suppressor to make it a great addition to a bug out bag should the mess hit the fan.
After the .22 look at a 7mm-08
