Does Texas require the field day for hunter safety? It looks like it’s optional if you are older than 16. Am I reading this correctly?

No. My wife took it last year while we were in North Dakota. No field day required.

I'm pretty sure LA no longer requires it since covid.

No they don't. I took it a couple of months ago. There is one that is free. The only charge is like $5.95 to get your card mailed to you. It's one put on by the NRA.

Louisiana still requires the field day with COVID. They are limiting class size though which is making it tough to get a seat.

I was told taking the Texas online only course is a work around. As far as I can tell there is nothing that blocks a non-Texas resident from taking it and using the Texas Hunter Safety in Louisiana.

Am I missing anything?

You're correct. I had the same issue finding field days in Louisiana. I believe Louisiana is doing away with the field day requirement next year, but from what I understand currently (a buddy knows the person in charge in Louisiana) the easy work around is to take Texas online and get your Texas card and Louisiana accepts a Texas certification. The site says "intended for Texas residents" and when you complete the class it asks for your address and there is a dropdown field for county that forces you to select a Texas county, but I just randomly selected one. It immediately issues you a temp card with an ID that you can use for your Louisiana hunting license. You pay $6 and they mail you a permanent card, but you can also access it online at any point. Disclaimer: I haven't purchased my license yet, so I can't confirm that it works with no trouble, but for $6 and a few hours online it was worth the risk. More education is never a bad thing anyway. I have heard that this should work fine though.
