On some we just use unscented Vaseline. Best option we've found besides the pvc setup.
Carpet strips - they give zero fricks and will still climb them even with bleeding paws.
PVC pipe set up- works excellent. We hang ours with 12" black bungee cords from an eye hook drilled through the top of the leg. We use 4" pipe and is about 18" from the ground.
