I'm looking to take my boys hunting for the first time. I figure it'd be best to do a squirrel hunt since they can get used to hunting in a bit more laid back environment than a deer hunt. I'm looking for advice on best time to go, and where. I gave up my hunting lease years ago, and would be getting back into it myself. I know better than to go strolling through public land during deer season, but wasn't sure on best times as far as before /after deer season. Thanks for any helpful advice.

My favorite time to go is after all the leaves are off the trees. You can see way better and get better shots. Not much better than watching bushy tails shaking branches on a still morning.

I would just go scout a couple trees, find some that are dropping good and go sit there. No need to make big rounds, let them come to you. May not get a bunch, but enough to keep your kids entertained and wanting to go back. And you won't be tromping through the woods pissing off every deer hunter around.

I wouldn't be running around the woods chasing squirrels during deer season...

Bow hunters tend to be a little more careful than gun hunters. When is the last time you heard about someone accidentally shot by a bow, being mistaken for game?

Guess I should have been more specific in my comment, but since you brought it up. You're absolutely right, shot placement with an arrow is critical, so I doubt a bow hunter is shooting at moving bushes, etc.

My secret spot (not for long on TD) - Cat Island NWR near St. Francisville.

They charge a small fee, so that keeps much of the undesirables out.

Most of the deer hunting is archery.

Also, deer hunters need a special permit for modern firearm use, and there are very few of those gun days for deer.

The Federal lands, NWRs, tend to be much more restrictive than State public lands. Most of the NWRs are bowhunting only, except for a few weekends of gun hunting. Maybe try one of those. Some require a permit, like Lac Ophelia, Bayou Cocodrie.

I squirrel hunt in Kisatchie NF in October, but once deer gun season opens, I try not to go in there w/o orange.
