When is the best time to use Weed&Feed for a south LA lawn - St Aug grass

Wait until early to mid April.

Separate the weed from the feed

April is way too late. By then it's already been in the mid 80s for a month and weed seeds have been if I were you I'd put down and pre emergent (not weed n feed) and fertilize in mid March-ish, when soil temps are around the 70s

pre emergent
Will pre emergent prevent new weeds from popping up in St. Aug. even if there are existing weeds that have been sprayed with weed killer (I used Bayer Advance)but not yet fully eradicated?

pre-emergent stops seed from germinating, therefore it will prevent weeds that aren't there now from becoming a problem. Should have already put some down, but putting it down right now is better than not. Then, in another couple weeks to a month, treat the weeds that have grown in with post emergent depending on lawn species. ( I have had great success with sethoxydim for grassy weeds such as crabgrass)
Weed and feed is a waste of money because the two applications need to occur at different times of the growing process in order to be effective.

quote:Absolutely yes. Most of the weeds in your yard right now are winter weeds.(that can be prevented by applying a pre-emergent in the fall) Putting down pre-emergent right now will prevent weeds that thrive in warmer soil temps.

Wjat fertilizer does everyone recommend for St Aug?

Use something organic because its cheaper and better in the long run. For example Milorganite . Its slow release which means it takes a couple weeks or less to green up but it feeds the roots deeper and helps then penetrate further into the soil. (1 of many benefits) Give it a try, you can put as much of it as you want down and not have to worry about burning the grass.

It’s cheaper per bag but significantly more than synthetic on price per lb of nitrogen.

Where can I get the Milorganite? Order from Lowe’s for delivery (not carried in stores)?
