I really don’t get why people say this. Of my 150+ encounters, I can think of only 1 or 2 that musked before I grabbed them. Even when handling them, I don’t smell any scent coming off of them unless they musk - and maybe 1 out of 10 ever musks me. Now ribbon snakes and most water snakes are nasty lil frickers and will musk you almost every time.

Agreed. I only smell them if I try to kill them.

Got to admit even I almost pooped a little when I almost stepped on one and it took off between my feet last week.

Yea, water snakes are more foul than moccasins. I like moccasins but I hate water snakes ( nasty lil frickers that you called them). Don't get me wrong I no longer handle mocassins but I'd rather handle a pit viper than put up with the venomless "nastly lil frickers". :-)

Yeah nowadays I generally ain’t wasting my time to catch most water snakes. Cottons really are one of the easiest snakes to catch because they just give zero fricks and are usually pretty chill.

All snakes smell incredibly bad when they musk you. I’d rather be bitten than musked when catching nonvenomous snakes.
