I bought the wife a new bird feeder for mothers day to go along with another one she has. I decided to sink a 4x4 in the middle of the yard and hang them, but doesn't seem to be getting much attention.

One feeder is a normal seed house type feeder, and the other is a suet feeder. They're both about 6.5 - 7 feet off the ground, and from reading, may be too high. I'm getting very little attention from birds right now even though its only been up a few days.

Also was thinking about putting a blue bird house on that post as well....good idea? Bad? My father in law is good with this stuff and has a ton of blue birds and other cool kinds at his house and camp but I cant seem to get it right for whatever reason.

Any tips welcome!

Bad idea to put a nest box on the feeder pole. No bird wants a bunch of visitors to its bedroom/nursery...

Best advice is to give it time. Put out some black oil sunflower seeds and the cardinals will find it. Once that happens, other birds will come. That is, assuming the rest of your yard is an inviting place. Birds need shelter, food, and water. You need trees or shrubbery for shelter. Food is more than just bird seed...birds rely on insects especially this time of year while they are raising young. Your feeder is just a quick easy snack, the real food is caterpillars, grasshoppers, spiders, etc.

If you don't have the shelter or insects, you may not see much action until the natural food sources dwindle in winter.

Sidenote, my birds LOVE peanut butter suet. Get the no-melt/year round kind from Amazon, tractor supply, etc. It will definitely increase the variety of birds that visit.

If you have hawks around with no cover for the birds to escape to, they may be hesitant to go to the feeder. Also, squirrels will run the birds off.

I have feeders that are 8-9 feet off the ground and I have lots of birds visiting.
