offshore-- three questions:
your a good trapper and i figure the time it takes you to make a set is the ideal time to shoot for. How long does it take you to make each set once you have a place picked out? 25 min? less?
2nd question is: how are you scouting and selecting areas? Looking for scratchs, tracks, dung, game trails? are you finding specific spots that the fox or coyote is traveling or are you just finding a spot with a lot of sign and setting your traps in attractive places?
3rd q: looks like you have inspired some old trapping interest on the board and some new interest as well. Now is a good time to tell us any tips or tricks or steps you take to avoid catching dogs. lol.

5 min max sometimes less.

I look for the same places you would scouting for deer. You know those buck trails where you only see bucks come out at your stand? More than likely those same trails are used by cats and coyotes. Funnel areas and spots that coyotes travel like old roads and pipe lines. Cats seem to be more of an edge walker and I love to set the wildlife strips for cats. The main way I scout is to look for sign.

There are none if a dog is in the area he will more than likely get caught. I have caught several dogs and none have sustained any permanent damage. They don't fight the trap like a coyote, cat or fox will. I try to set as far away as I can from houses or dogs. I don't want to catch them, I have never caught anything in a set after a dog has been caught. There are a lot of trapping sites that won't allow anyone to talk about non target catches in some ways I agree with this but in another I think peoiple should know that the traps we use don't cut the animals legs off or severely damage their feet.
Todays catch I caught 2 coyotes and a coon, had another cat pull out. I am beginning to doubt these new traps for cats.

thanks for great info. keep us posted.
can you adjust the springs on those traps for cat escapees? we used to have some fox traps that were adjustable i think but i could be imagining that. maybe more pressure but short of leg break?

No way to adjust only add springs to the other side of the trap to make it faster, it's not the holding power. There are different brand traps that are faster but these traps were supposed to be very good which they are but IMO they are not fast enough for cats.

thanks. i learned something else from this great freakin thread.
we had two kinds of traps i guess. we had number 9's that i think were victors and they had leafs on each side and you either could step on each leaf and set it or put it on your knee and break it down with a hand down on each leaf. those were for coons, otter, mink, muskrat and beaver. one of those trapped whipped my tail one time.
then we had coil spring traps that had no leaf per say-- kind of like your traps. just a tight arse coil spring and the traps had rubber insets on the jaws. i remember you had to squeeze a leaf to set it but not the same way as the double leaf trap. those were for foxes. back then we weren't trapping coyoyes really. never ever caught a cat.
i do remember as you said though catching foxes and the rubber being all messed up. but we never changed the rubbers i dont think-- just made some adjustments and kept truckin.
its hard to remember all the details. i was the sardine guy, and just a kid. but after reading this thread i think i know why we only ever caught grey foxes.
eta: i remember filing down the slot in the tang on the double leave traps so that they were easier to trip. and the coil spring traps were i guess the ones we could change the springs on.

You had #11s or #2 or 1 1/2 coon traps never heard of #9s.
I know several guys that catch the greys on sardines. I think next year I am gonna key on the Greys since I knocked the coyotes down some this year.

Hang in there you'll figure it out.
Todays catch 2 coyotes and a possum. I had two more cats step with in inches of my trap pan. I am gonna have to rethink my cat sets and traps. Think I am gonna go with bigger traps and set two traps per set.

My baby chicken scenario catches something everytime. Just never know what.

Caught 1 cat, 1 grey fox, 1coon and a possum.
The cat got out of the trap just as I put the choke pole arounds it's neck, it was a little hairy there for a few seconds.
