All depends on what you're fishing. For crankbaits, for instance, you want something with a low gear ratio, so you can have a steady retrieve and the bait move slower...sometimes the same with spinnerbaits depending on the situation. High gear ratios come in handy when you're fishing frogs or punching grass in grass or slop or when flipping in to heavy cover, to pull the fish out of there quick before they can get you hung up on anything. The higher gear ratios also come in handy for reds, as you can pick up slack line quick when fighting them. Really the regular revos are a pretty intermediate gear ratio, not too fast not too slow, so they'd be all purpose IMO.

I use high speed for 2 things: traps and buzz baits.

Ok, so i finally got to test it on the bayou this morning. After oiling it, setting the three spring loaded tabs in, the three pitch tabs out, and having the knob adjusted to as loose as possible I'm getting nearly double the distance as stock (pitch tabs @ in position, spring tabs @ moving position).

That's better. Once you play around with them some you can get some distance.

I only have one, and it's on my saltwater/crankbait rod
I don't find it matters that much. You can always reel slower, but you can only reel so fast.
