I just have the experience to know you have an inflated opinion of Water Dog and your animals.
Once again, typical arrogant a-hole shines through. You don't know me, and you damn sure didn't know my dogs. I know your type.
If there is one bit of info I would like to impart on the OP, it's to steer very clear of knuckleheads like you when they choose a trainer. Have a good day.

Also, just FWIW, hunt tests are judged on a standard. Dogs don’t “smoke” other dogs at hunt tests.
When you see it with your own eyes, you know which dogs just passed, and which ones put on a clinic. All of mine were hard chargers, and english to boot(trainers hate english labs). Broad chests, big block heads, and beautiful to watch work. I miss all of them. A father and 2 sons, all yellow males

Why would he steer clear of me? I suggested a good modern training program that countless dogs have been trained with. Mike Lardy’s Total Retriever Program has trained countless dogs by regular guys.
You suggested some shitty 60 year old book that was written before modern training methods became a thing and then suggested you had the best dogs in the world from that book.
And if you knew anything at all, you’d know I’m not a professional trainer. You can’t judge Field Trials as a pro.
Oh God….you just opened up the old trope that everyone hates English Labs. lol.

You’re either like 75, or you’re trolling.

And then doubles down.
I am not surprised you don't understand why I would advise OP to steer clear of you and your 50yrs of experience. Like I said, I know your type. Once again, have a nice day, I hope for good this time.

Experience is not arrogance.
I trained my first dogs using Water Dog back in the 70’s and early 80’s. I collected many a pocket full of rocks to get them through basic blinds. The idea of your dogs outpacing modern hunt test dogs using that relic is absurd.
I also spent many a hunting day thinking I had the best dog in the world when I used Water Dog…and maybe I did in my mind at that time.
Those dogs bring back wonderful memories. But they couldn’t hold a candle to today’s dogs.
Time moves on and training methods evolve….I’ve tried to suggest those methods to the OP.
I’ve been involved with retrievers since I was 8 years old. I’m certainly not an old man by any means. Just been around dogs all my life and have seen much in the retriever world.

Let’s go!
We can start with a good specklebelly hunt! My favorite.
To the forum…I don’t usually bite on shiny hooks…but I’m deep into a handle. Ha! Double entendre dog humor. Lol.

Bill Tarrant would like a word or two. Hey Pup Fetch it Up was a great book on having a family dog and duck dog starting from pup to advance training.
+1 for the Tarrant book.
Also, re: force fetching:
Was just talking about this to my old man, who's a retired pro trainer. His take is that force fetching is a great tool for competent, capable trainers, but there are a lot of asshats that try to use it as a crutch/shortcut/whatever. He said that he couldn't remember the last time that he *had* to force fetch a dog. YMMV.
At any rate, the OP should have a candid conversation with prospective trainers about the kind of dog he wants and the options to get it there. Congrats and good luck!

I'm in... and I bet I'll be the only guy with a Cocker!
In all seriousness, I'd love to get together for some dog work with like-minded folks in the NOLA area sometime. New thread?
