Registering my dad's boat from when he was a kid

So, my dad gave me his boat from when he was a kid. It's an old Delhi Aluminum 12 foot V-hull from the 50's. It still looks great and has no leaks. In the state of Washington, you don't have to register anything under 16 feet, so it's never been registered. It still has the original tag with model and whatnot.
I've heard horror stories about registering boats in this condition in Louisiana, what should I expect? Is it even worth the trouble? I'd like to keep it since it was my dad's boat.

He’s still alive. No paperwork.

Many years ago in college I tried to do something similar in Alabama.
Old aluminum boat that had been on a family farm for my whole life...like a dumb kid I go in courthouse to get it registered so I can use it in public waters around campus.
I encounter the red tape issue.
My buddy and I walk out into hallway...find paper and pen and he signs a bill of sale for my boat for $1. (He sells my boat to me)
Walk back in and get my registration.
Things may be different now though.

Gave a boat to an employee of my dad's and he registered it in his name. He shot himself in the head and his ole lady was long gone. It took a lawyer to get it put back in my name. DNR said you had to put an ad in the paper claiming you "found" the boat and had to wait a number of months or something with no owner coming forward to have it put in back your name. That's in SC though.
