Any of you OB'ers have a policy on your pup? Who did you get the policy through?

Thinking about taking a policy out on my retriever who's a little over a year old. I figure a few bucks a month could save me some serious coin down the road if an accident were to take place (God Forbid). Maybe I'm crazy but as most of you know, a young lab will eat anything they can get into, and she also will be spending quite a bit of time in the marsh where accidents can happen. Thoughts or advice is appreciated.

i seriously looked in to this when my pup was a little younger. essentially it came down to most vets not taking the insurance and you never know where youll be when you need the service. my advice is to set asside a few hundred bucks for an emergency fund.

Thank you for the input. I keep cash in savings for any kind of emergency. Sounds like i would be better off using that if need be. I would love to find out a vet doesn't accept insurance in an emergency situation and have to bite the bullet anyway.

I believe in self insuring for pets. However that all depends upon your emergency fund and outlook for your dog.

I have one on my boxer. My father took the policy out on him and it has more than paid for itself. It depends on the breed if the dog as well

Talked to a my fraternity brother's wife who is a vet about this. They are recommending this more and more due to the same issues with humans. To avoid getting sued they run a shite ton of tests for everything costing you a lot of money. Find out what your vet takes and get a policy imo.

They sure do, the insurance money goes to them. It gives pet owners the incentive to do all kinds of expensive procedures.

read the policy carefully. Most don't even cover the full annual visits.

I've had a minimum of 4 pets for the better part of the last 20 years and don't consider the expense of medical treatment as a reason to put the animal down so I've seen my share of healthy vet bills (just spent $600 on a damn cat with a plugged pee hole), the best "insurance" I've gotten was a Care Credit credit card. Lots of vets take it and so do many of your own medical providers (saved my arse at the dentist). Usually 6 months no interest if paid in full.
