Next week for the Finnish midsummer holiday my friend and I are headed to the Tornionjoki. Tornio river is Europe's longest free-flowing salmon river. According to what I read its supposed to be one of the top places in the world to catch salmon. The average salmon caught here is said to be about 8 kg.

I'm a terrible fisherman. I have cheap equipment that is basically the same as buying a 29.99 fishing set you would buy from wal mart. I do not own or know how to fly fish. The cheapest models here are too expensive for my budget.

We have rented a plywood made salmon boat with a 5 hp motor from 2pm sat thru 2 pm Sunday. I guess we will be trolling mostly. Which leads to the question, what should I use? Ive been reading about the rapala j9 and j11 crankbaits. Is it worth it to spend 12 dollars a lure on these?

Furthermore, they only allow us to use 4 poles per boat. So should I troll with all 4 lines? Can you catch salmon with jigs(I suck at jigging) ?

I've caught damn near every fish there is in Finland but the salmon has been elusive and I would like to scratch it from my bucket list. Any help would be much appreciated thanks.

Folks troll with plugs in the NW so I don't see why it wouldn't hurt.

maintaining 4 lines in a small boat won't be much fun. Lots of maintenance imo. Without experience you'll be tangling lines and not fishing.

I troll 4 at most w/4 people but usually 3. Eta....in a 21' boat with staggered rods. 10' 6", 9' 6" outside...9' in.

You can catch salmon on jigs. Twitching, basically bass fishing for salmon has become all the rage for tributary fall salmon around here.

The way we troll most of the time is with cut plug herring behind a flasher at slow speed with a lead dropper trolling the bottom....just fast enough to make the bait roll....called the death roll.

Cut plug herring represent a hurt fish in the water and even when not feeding they can't resist killing something.

We also anchor up in traveling lanes and use plugs/wobblers/bait.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for the advice.
I have been watching some flasher videos but haven't seen any of that for sale around these parts. Will look heavier at an actual fishing supply shop around here.

Researching a bit I found out what they call trolling.

It's what we in the NW call back trolling. In this case another term is pulling plugs.

Btw....those boats look kind of cool but not a lot of space once that rod bends over and the chaos begins .

Basically....you will motor up to an area that looks good. Look for other boats since they know where to go. Stay away from the fast moving water. Salmon prefer the easy route.

Once you find a stretch of water the stern will face down river and 1 person rows backwards to slow the drift of the boat. Take turns, you will get tired. You want to very slowly cover ground so you will be working. Keep the boat straight down river.

The other person will deploy the plugs....when I backtroll I go about 35-50 on my line counters but ask around and find out a good #. If no line counters do "pulls"....grab line from the reel and pull to the 1st eyelet....about 2'....so 30 pulls is 60'.

Anyway....whoever isn't rowing deploys the rods. I'd advise no more than 3. Someone will have to reel 2 in quickly before the salmon gets tangled in it.

You will know if the rods are working because the tips will be shaking....this just pisses the salmon off and they strike. Having 3 plugs out creates a wall....they might not get pissed at the 1st one but when they turn and see the next that will probably do it....bam!

Now....once the rod goes down do not pick it up instantly....make sure it's pinned. Don't set the hook, they set it themselves. Just apply pressure.

This is new to you but if I'm rowing and the rod goes down I start back rowing hard for a second to really pin the hook.

For more of an idea on what I'm talking about just search trolling salmon tornio river.

The only guide I know around my parts that films pulling plugs is Mike West on YouTube.

He has loads of back trolling videos. It's a very effective method of killing salmon and steelhead. So much so that a friend of mine got a bunch of flack from some guides after he wrote an article on it years ago.

Super deadly....a lot don't do it much because it is work.

I always use this method in my drift boat in the fall salmon seasons.

Setup is easy....no weight is used. When you row it makes the plugs dive. I'm sure you can get help there.

Scratch the flashers....they basically fly fish or use plugs from what I saw.

I love Finland and midsummer is so much fun.

See if you can borrow something from a friend since everything is expensive there.

I spent a summer in Tampere but never did any fishing.

They definitely have some big salmon.

We were out on the water one day and I couldn’t figure out what the guy was doing but apparently he was trolling on lake Nasijarvi in his 30+ ft cabin cruiser. I watched him fight then wrestle in like a 20+lb salmon in a speedo off the back deck. Was quite funny to watch from a distance.

They use dead shrimp died all kinds of weird color under a bobber here in the pacific northwest. They use all kinds of other shite....spinner bait blades the size of a boat paddle, that sort of crap....but the died dead shrimp under a bobber is what they use when they are catching meat and not trying to make things difficult.

Salmon are by far the biggest fishing let down I have ever known. They are catfish, period. They make a decent run and then they are done....if they ever make a run...many times they are so close to dead they simply come straight to the boat. They are a little different in saltwater and closer to the coast but after they have entered their river and been there a day or so they are about the same as catfish. Good eating though. But no better than catfish in my opinion.

They'd be fun on a flyrod but not redfish fun. Steelhead are good sport fish but salmon are waaaaaaaaayyyyyyy over rated as a sport fish. Anything that can be caught on a dead shrimp died fluorescent pink under a bobber is suspect.....

Most use live sand shrimp with salmon eggs/tuna belly in the tribs. You're thinking of cured coon shrimp/prawns. People will use that but I don't know anyone who does. More of a steelhead bait.

never seen such a big blade. 3.5's are a favorite of a lot of folks.

I guess we see it differently. Have you been once or twice or what?

Sep 1 is the opening of fall salmon season in the tribs (WA state) and I see salmon jumping like mad and tearing off like crazy going down into log piles breaking people off constantly. This happens for weeks. The fish don't turn that fast.

Use a spinning setup and it's even more challenging.

Ever catch a B run coho?

Those would change your mind on how fun. That's my favorite season. 10-15 lb fish that are acrobatic like steelhead.

That's a lot of fish that are suspect then....including redfish

It's not like a redfish. Comparing them is why you're let down. They are more elusive. You cant just find them and toss bait and get your 5 in a short bit...unless in the salt. They are easiest to catch in the salt because they constantly feed. Once they enter the rivers it becomes a challenge. That's the fun cause they don't just eat eat eat...you have to spark a bite sometimes And you have to get the 1st light bite and put time in.

I can't wait to bust out the drift boat!

I haven't caught a bunch of them but I have been 15 times or so and have caught some. I usually go back to catching bass...the bass fishing is SUPERB even if they ain't a lot of size to 'em.

I can definitely say that Steelhead on the other hand are a GREAT gamefish....

In light of my experience with Salmon I am very open to the idea of being enlightened as to their worthiness as a foe...just saying....

Where do you live? I'm in Aberdeen. The Humptulips is 45 min away. Satsop is 35 min away, Wynoochee is 25 min away. I fish all 3.

I might do it this year or next but I want to go to the Quinalt river and get a walk in Indian guide (it's required below the quinalt lake) and catch trophy steelhead.

Supposedly 20 lbers are not uncommon with their broodstock program. Tons of fish to be caught.

Not a fan of our treaties with them but I think the Indians should take over all the hatcheries. No one has the fish they do.

Eta....steelhead are more fun as a game fish. King Salmon just bull you around mostly trying to break you off. Fun on spinning gear though. Coho are like steelhead.

Woah....ok. I figured JBLM.

If you travel you got a seat on my boat.

You are at least on the best side of the state for bass.

Ever go walleye fishing? Friend of mine kills em at Potholes reservoir. It's an hour from you.

Look up TJ Hester....guy is in Tri Cities....he is a walleye BEAST.

Funny bastard too. Also a salmon slayer.

Speaking of salmon....If you are salmon fishing near tri cities those fish are spent and are smokers so I can see why you said what you did.

Near me they are bright til October/November....the Humptulips river has the longest King salmon run in the state.
