OB Mechanics----Battery Charger Question

I have one of those battery chargers on wheels like they use in repair shops. The positive clamp gets real plastic melting hot. Is this thing broken or can I replace the clamps?

Most of them come with pretty cheap clamps. Most auto parts stores carry good ones. I just got some new ones that ran about $20 .

May have a bad connection between the clamp and the wire lead. Also clean metal that makes the connection. More resistance=more heat.

It could be just cheap clamps but, I'd test the output of the charger to make sure it's not having problems i.e. putting out too much voltage.

How do you test? What is acceptable?

Test with a mulitimeter. Should show around 14v of output.
