just got back from Bowies, was looking at some compound bows mainly for target practice now, but eventually might be used for hunting. they showed me a bow by Bear, cant remember the exact name, but it was $399, came with sights and a stabilizer. 399 is about what im looking to spend being a novice and all. anyone here have a bow by Bear? care to give a review on them?
ETA: the model he showed me was the Bear Encounter, he also told me the next model up is a Bear Legion... worth the extra $100? im a beginner also keep that in mind

Bear makes good bows. Probably best bang/buck out there right now. My brother shoots one and I really like it for the $400 he paid for it. My next bow will be a bear.

good to know, the guys at Bowie Outfitters were great, they understood what i was looking for and what my price was and didnt push me to buy anything i didnt need or know about.
also, next question, can any bow be rigged for bow fishing?

Not quite, but I'm no expert on it

The one you were looking at was likely a Bear Charge. I have one and hunt with it ( just finished shooting in the yard with it).
Couldn't be any happier with it so far. Have had it 2 seasons and got my first kill with it last year. As far as converting it to a bowfishing rig, I assume you could but that's a lot of bow for a fish. Will only back down to about 55# and you only really need 30 for bowfishing

Bear has some good bows,
Before you buy your bow ask this question. I'm sure they'll let you know

I shoot a Bear Carnage, before that I shot a Bear Truth 2. I have loved both of them. The Carnage is badass! Like others said, best bang/buck. I just can't bring myself to drop the $$$$ for a Mathews. I got a good deal on the Carnage from a rep for Bear though.

My son gave me a Bear Instinct, used it last year & love it. Two shots two kills but that's all about the shooter

I shoot an older model bear and I don't see any reason to upgrade. I shoot it goes where I told it too. End of story. Good luck. As long as it feels comfortable to you go for it.

I had a Bear about 20 years ago. They were obviously pioneers in the archery business. I haven't kept up with them in a very long time though, so I don't know anything about their current bows. I did have a Jennings Quasar tournament bow in the late 90's. Jennings was an offshoot from Bear.
But, as far as bowfishing........ I don't think that would be ideal. You could make it work, but we always did our bowfishing with old bows we had laying around. I always used a recurve because I just think they're better suited to that kind of shooting.

I know several people who shoot a Bear bow and they are all very happy with it. The biggest thing is to go shoot it and make sure that it feels comfortable to you. Most All of these newer bows are high enough quality for what you will be using them for. Don't get caught up in the name printed on the bow. Buy the bow that fits you the best.
For the bowfishing, I absolutely would not use my new bow. It will get wet, muddy, scratched, etc. Not to mention it's WAY overkill. Check out eBay or craigslist and buy an old recurve and tie a zebco to it. Cheap/easy and you won't be pissed when it gets ruined.

The only negative I have heard on Bears in general is the finish chips easily. If you bump it walking to the stand some of the camo might chip off (kind of like when you scratch your car). It never bothered me b/c it just gives it more character (battle scars!). I'm not worried about my bow looking pretty.
You probably want a bow fishing bow with a much lower draw weight. I have never bow fished, but I have had the same question. According to those who have gone, you will be shooting A LOT and 65-70 lb draw will wear you out. Also, you don't need that much power to catch a fish. Think about it, when you shoot a deer with your bow most times it passes clean through, think what that will do to a fish...
