all I got out of your story was that you hunted a deer for 5 years and didn't kill it
you passed up a 150+ deer
and have nothing to show for it
and you are talking about Kansas
2 or 3 of the deer in those pics are worthy of the wall for most hunters especially a 14 year old
the odds of these deer getting another year or two AND coming out in the daylight AND standing still long enough are slim to none

Go hunting with your boys and let them shoot what THEY think is a trophy. Doe, young buck, whatever... if it makes their heart race and gets them excited, let em shoot it. Plenty of time to "trophy hunt" when they get older.

I really don't see that as some sort of failure. Others hunted him too, yet he died of old age on 100 acres with public land within 1000 yards in two directions and season-long hunting pressure from private land (including the 100 acres) during most of November every year.
I am all for this guy's kids (or anyone's kids) getting their first buck. Go for it.
But none of the posters in this thread are getting their first buck. The guy my post was in response to sounds like he aims for about 20 a year.
I may have never got that big buck but I have a 170 inch deer on the wall, and by doing the simplest thing in the world and not shooting everything that walks I feel pretty good I'll see a good one this year and at least have an opportunity. To be honest I don't kill a mature trophy but about once every 5-6 years.
