Sorry to hear about your dog. Once a little time has passed, I'd encourage you to get another dog. You and your family obviously enjoy their company and I believe all kids need a dog. Another thing to consider is if you live around livestock and wildlife, a dog (any breed) will protect your kids from critters like snakes and such.
It would be great to see you take in another stray. Maybe a shelter dog would work for you since they are usually temperment tested. Just a thought...
