Coolest looking moth I’ve seen - sort of a whale tail thing going on. Anyone know what kind of moth this is?

It’s one of the Sphinx moths.

Had the opportunity to do this one night with a handful of people including Doug Tallamy. Pretty cool experience to be with someone that can identify pretty much anything, tell you the host plants, etc.

There’s an app to identify them with : Leps. But once you ID them you’ll remember them for the next time. I would keep a sheet out from spring to late summer.
If you have oak trees in your yard, they’re good host trees, and you’ll get moths regularly.

That’s cool, have you ever seen the one that looks like bird shite? I see them on my window screens sometimes.

That’s a giant swallowtail

Some caterpillars look like something out of a sci fi movie
