i do this about once a month.

Definately. I just have it at a very manageable level at the moment (recent bed overhaul). As soon as they start popping up quicker than I can get to them I will bring the liquid out.

My condolences sir. All you can do is try to stay on top of it. As geaux said, spraying is definately the best method, as pulling leaves room for more immediate growth.

You can do it any time, when the heat is on it seems to speed it up. Last year I made a pretty hot mix, applied about noon, and by 3 they were done.
