This is a critically endangered duck that was introduced from Laysan Island to Midway Atoll (Midway Island) in 2002. These ducks are small and they don’t fly much, but they do fly between Sand and Eastern Islands in the atoll which is separated by about a mile. There’s around 150 of these on Midway and less than that on Laysan (don’t quote me on the numbers, but it’s not off by much). These islands are part of the Hawaiian Islands and Midway is about 1300 miles from the main Hawaiian islands.
I worked on the island for 4 months in 2018 and just did 10 months ending in June of this year.
Many of you are saying “Midway?” It’s amazing how many people don’t know what Midway Island is and what it represents. Since I’ve been, I’ve talked to people of all ages and many are clueless about Midway.

Saw job posting not too long ago, they were looking for a Refuge Manager recently. Not many people know that Midway has a Fish and Wildlife Service office on the island.
Tried to move out their, but my wife was deadset against the idea of being in the middle of nowhere

The same Midway as the big naval battle?

Yeah, they were going through the process of hiring a new manager when I was out there. They had three different ones come in for a month or so and then one of them decided she liked it and came back for the full time position.
There are about 30 Thai nationals that run all of the facilities, maintenance, cooks, etc., and some of them have been there 20-30 years with only 6 weeks off per year to go home.
Ten months was enough for me, but would definitely go back. Headed to Ascension Island tomorrow. Total opposite direction.

Yup that's what I was told too. Guy I know used to work out there at the Refuge and told me all about it.
Younger me (before wife and kids) would have moved out there in a heartbeat
