I want to upgrade the stock and barrel on my Remington I’ve had for years. It’s a 700 BDL.

I can’t decide between the classic and the McMillan hunter. The hunter looks a little bulkier with a cheek piece and palm swell. The classic is an exact replica.

I realize it’s personal preference, but would like to hear yours.

Depends on how heavy of a barrel you are going with.

If you are going with a lightweight sporter contour like the factory barrel and this is strictly a hunting rifle, I'd get the lighter stock.

You could also look at the HTG, its pretty similar but a little better looking to me.

Check out Manners stocks as well. They have thr mcs-t and mcs-t3.

Ive had a t3 before and it was very nice.

You will have to bed all of them to get a better fit.

I've always used McMillan and Manners until recently. I just got a Grayboe stock on an old Remington 700 (owner is a McMillan son). A lot cheaper at around 275 bucks and well made, just not light. I just completed a full custom build and went with AG Composites for its stock. I will never buy another brand besides them now. Took 4 weeks to make and get it to me. Full carbon fiber stock in any configuration you want. Great guys that have more stocks than their website lists. There is a reason most of the major rifle manufacturers contract ag composites to build their high end carbon stocks for their rifles.

Plus AG is 100 percent veteran owned and operated. Can't beat that. Here’s a picture of my build I finished last week.

as Kengel pointed out, stock options are often influenced by the barrel contour. Most factory barrels are a "sporter" or #3 barrel contour which taper to .625" at the muzzle. The Sendero and Varmint Special rifles have the same barrel contour which is called the Sendero/Varmint Special, closer to a #5 or #6 barrel that tapers to .825" at the muzzle. See barrel profile pics below.

I've owned close to 50 McMillan stocks in just about every stock design and color offered. I began building custom files in the late 1980's and still build 2-3 custom rifles a year. I prefer varmint contour barrels with a wide beaver tail fore end. I mainly shoot off a solid front rest or bench at the range or box blind in the field. Pictured below are 3 different stocks often chosen for hunting rifles.

Top: McMillan Hunter that is a copy of the Sako 75 Varmint yet inletted for a R700. 75% dark green , 25% white swirl. Palm swell, and Flat bottom to ride a sand bag well and feels great in the hand when shooting. With raised monte carlo and pronounced cheek piece, it has perfect position for cheek when viewing through 30mm or larger objective scopes. At from sling swivel stud area, stock measures 1.900" wide , and is 10 5/8" long from recoil lug to end of stock. 1965 Remington 40X single shot action, chambered in 17 Little Nasty which is a cartridge I designed to shoot coyotes, crows, pigs, and varmints. 25 gr Berger Match bullet at 4200 fps.

Middle: HTG with adjustable cheek piece. 70% OD green , 15% black, and 15% tan swirl. Slight palm swell, and not quite as wide flat bottom (1.765" at sling swivel stud) . Points well with the narrower forend that is more rounded than other 2 stocks. Monte carlo type stock with no cheek piece, can be ordered normal or adjustable. Stock measures 10 5/8" long from recoil lug to end of stock. Chambered in 300/221 , known as the 300 Blackout today.

Bottom:Remington Varminter black pebble paint textured finish. More of a compact stock that measures 1.965" at sling swivel stud, and is 9 3/4" from recoil lug to end of stock. Palm swell with wide forend , as stock feels very good. Would be ideal for a 22" or shorter barrel.

My favorite is the McMillan Hunter (top dark green stock)

Here is a rifle I helped build for a friend. Stiller TAC 30 action chambered in 20VarTarg .. McMillan Hunter stock pattern

Here is a McM Model 7 AWR stock , rifle is a 20 Tactical

various barrel contours - all .30 caliber barrels

I've also owned lots of Manners stocks and Kelbly stocks. Can post pics if you'd like

I'm not familiar w/ your cartridge and an curious what brass it's based on? Sounds like a "nasty" little round indeed.

I cut my teeth chasing accuracy in the short-range benchrest game.
Since the 6PPC is the most accurate cartridge developed,
I "micro-sized" the case for the perfect combination of Lapua brass, Vhitavhouri N133, and Berger Match bullets.
Parent case is the 220 Russian, basically neck down to .17 caliber and bump shoulder back -.180".
I load at the range using Wilson hand dies

cartridges L to R ... 221 Fireball - 17 LN - 6PPC no neck turn - 6PPC neck turned - 220 Russian

load data - 21.5 grs of powder equals tiny groups

17LN with a 15 lb groundhog (barely fit in a 5 gal bucket) shot at 350 yds

I also created a .20 caliber version

Very cool! It's amazing how accurate those short & fat cartridges are. Although I'm not a benchrest shooter (and never will be), I'm familiar w/ the short & fat cartridges as I prairie dog hunt w/ Remington XP 100 handguns chambered in 22 BR and 6 BR. That's some great shooting, GB! I'm jealous.

Brightside,
I have 3 McMillan stocks, all for Remington XP-100 handguns. I've had one >20 yrs and been pleased w/ it; the other one is only a few months old and hasn't been installed to an action/barrel yet; I bought the third one used and have had it nearly 3 years. I've also got 3 XP-100 stocks from HS Precision My only rifle synthetic stock is one made by Precision Brown. In short, I've been satisfied w/ all my synthetic stocks. I'll enclose a pic of my two McMillan stocks to help w/ your decision on what color(s) you want. The bottom stock is black (unpainted) while the top one is 60% medium tan/30% medium brown/10% black.

Good luck and keep us updated.

I really want to upgrade the barrel as well as the stock. Want to keep the barrel profile so I think it’ll be a #3 contour.

Any recommendations on who I could have to put everything together, and true the action?

If you don't mind sending it out, Longrifles inc. does very nice work. Look at their packages they originally offered for snipershide forum. I used them to true a Remington 700, flute bolt, and install a Christensen barrel and loved their work.

There are tons of gunsmiths.

If you want to stay local, Don Geraci is in Independence.

He will be one of the best as well. Going to send him my stuff whenever it comes in.

Nola .. you forgot to mention the ARC rings I have a few sets myself as they are the real deal.

Bright side ... Nola and Kengel gave provide 2 great options for gunsmithing work. Chad Dixon @ Long Rifles has developed a loyal following as his rifles shoot.

Don Geraci built my 17LN (green stock) rifle pictured above and at least a dozen of my other custom rifles. He’s a member of the Benchrest Hall of Fame and his work is meticulous. He builds scary accurate rifles.

Another GS to consider, PacNor. Chris (owner) will take care of you as they produce custom rifle barrels. PacNor will true your action & bolt, fit , chamber, and crown a select match grade s.s. barrel to you action for $625.

Here are some ballpark prices on GS work.
$365 - s.s. select match grade barrel
$300 - fit, chamber, crown barrel
$125-150 - true / blueprint action
$300 - pillar and glass bed stock to action
$550+. - McMillan / Manners stock

Lol I did leave them off. If I'm not cutting ounces, I will always use ARC rings. Hawkins precision ultra-lights if I am.
