Hey dude, saw you said you are running the fireboard 2 and another type of fan on yours wanted to get your opinion on some mods. Didn't know if you would check back there or not. I managed to pick up a V1 for $150 on closeout at Walmart.
What fan did you get and got links to what you did? I'm not gonna run the fireboard, I have a heatermeter I built that I plan to use with it.
I have Nathan's vent mod and fan protection coming and the new charcoal grate from Masterbuilt. Do you think the SS mod for the firebox is necessary? Seems like people are split if it is or not. Masterbuilt doesn't sell the upgrade parts for it yet that they put on the V2.
Anything else you recommend?

I really want that 800 series with the griddle.

I did too, but $150 vs $700 was a no brainer and I could decide if I want to spend the money next time or catch the 800 on a ridiculous sale in a year.

You bought it for $150? WTF How did I miss that and why didn't you pick one up for me?

Masterbuilt made some upgrades to the charcoal grate, the door/lid switches, and the firebox metal. These are all on the 800 from the start, but are new to the 560 and 1050 this year. Walmart and a lot of other stores still have the V1. Walmart is clearing out the V1 at some stores and I have seen prices range from 100 to 500. They do not price match other walmart stores on close out though, so you have to go to that Walmart and hope it’s in stock. I found a store through brickseek about 2 hours from my house that had it for $150.
Check the brickseek link above and just start putting in zip codes of places you would drive to.

Nice! I hadn't heard about that. Did they release that info somewhere?
Those were pretty much the only negatives I had heard about (faulty switches, firebox corroding, grate letting big chunks through).
I checked and there is a walmart 1 1/2 away selling for $300 but knowing about the upgrades, I may just stick with getting a full priced 800 series.

Yeah, you can buy the upgraded switches for like $5 a piece if you need them. Grate is $15 + shipping, bought it already. They are supposed to be releasing the firebox updates, but haven't done that yet. No one is sure if that is really necessary. I have seen some people say it is, but others say once the bricks harden, its fine for the metal to burn away. I may buy the upgrade here, but not sure. Firebricks are only like $30 through masterbuilt, their warranty is great though.
Other issues is the vents, no vent control on any of them. Nathan on the facebook groups has the best solution to this I have seen, I got one of his coming. He also bought extra of those slide pieces to cut down the fire and made some into fan protection sliders, I got one of those. Some people have had charcoal fall into the fan and had bad times.
I'm also thinking of buying a manifold cover, but using just foil for that right now, using foil on top the fire box to stop it from leaking as much too.
For $300 though, I would go with the 800 most likely too. $150 was too good to pass up.
