Marine Speaker/ Amp Question
Posted on 5/8/18 at 10:59 am

I'm upgrading my front speakers in my boat to JL 8.8" Marine speakers. They are rated at 125W RMS. My question is, is that 125W each, or combined for the pair?
The reason I ask is that I may be upgrading amps as well. does each channel need 125W RMS , or is it half that per Channel?
Is anyone running these and have advice on amp wattage?

Should be 125 each.
No you don't have to have that powerful of an amp.
Something with even 30-40 W RMS/channel should be plenty loud enough to piss everyone fishing by you off....if you wanted to, not saying you will.

If you u are talking about the m8.8 I wouldn’t spend the extra money for those if I wasn’t feeding them atleast 100 watts rms each.
My setup right now is the mx7.7 two pairs being run by a fourchannel 70 watt rms oerchannel at 4ohm jblma6004.
The problem with not supplying enough power to the heavier m series is that the drivers really need that much power to get the full potential. Otherwise you are just as good running the mx series with 60-75 watts rms.
Ideally you can fit an 8” or 10” sun somewhere and power it with the jl 300/1 amp that crutchfield is selling for $100.
That would be the ultimate “budget setup”. You could put a high pass filter on your four component speaker to pull out most of the bass form them so you can play them much louder than normal. Then replace that bass pulled out of the speakers with the sun on a low pass filter setting.
This would give you really crisp loud sound because the component speakers aren’t trying to reproduce a lot of low frequency bass which they aren’t really good at and will help prevent the amp from clipping at higher volumes.
Speaker systems I geek out over.
If yoy want you can email me and I can help go over a good system that would be in your budget even if a sub isn’t what u want to do

Stop being a tight arse and buy a good amp.

Thats kinda what i was thinking, but wasnt sure. 60W vs 125W is a big difference, and the M8.8's arent cheap, so i want to get all i can out of them.

The tweeters on the speakers have high pass filters built in already. The amp does as well. I've heard nothing but good things about them. I dont have any space for a Sub, so i was banking on these having enough lows

There is a time an place for everything.
I have a old 2 stroke 90 yamaha which must be the loudest motor ever created. So it was buy a 4 stroke, or upgrade the sound system so I can here the music while running.
Plus I like to party.....

You are going to want a lot more for those 8.8s than 125w, FWIW.
I have the m77s for my interior speakers and put 150rms to them and they could take more.
Problem with under powering a speaker is you turn it up to hear them, but you are pushing the amp to its max which causes distortion which can blow the speakers

That is a good point. and I'm guesses that JL doesnt blow there wattage ratings out the water like lower name brand speakers. I'll look for something in the 125-150 range.

I would do this then let me look at their exact specifications of what they say but if jl is truly saying 125rms I wouldn’t hesitate to feed 150watts rms. You could definitely bridge a four channel amp if you are only running a single pair and that would get ou there.
What is your budget?
And yeah the m8.8 should definitely give you the bottom end you want

thats each bruh. im running 300 x 4 to my 7.7s (75 each) and you know how those guys scream.

Boom
Jl mx280/4 $250 from sonic electronics
Bridged 140watts rms x 2 @4 ohm
You can most likely go a cheaper amp route to feed the same power but that Jl quality is hard to beat
That will feed that pair of m8.8 beautifully

No they are very conservative. 125 rms, 250 max, they want you to be in the middle of that, but you can feed them 250 each, so long as its a good amp.
Wetsounds and JL are the top marine speakers right now
JL, Alpine, Clarion and Wetsounds all have great amps.
Depending on your alternator output, you also might not be putting 14.4v to the amps, which is usually what they rate them at.

Should’ve gotten wetsound
Posted on 5/8/18 at 12:50 pm to NYCAuburn
I have 4 speakers in the boat, the two 8.8's are going up front, and i have 2 6.5" kickers in the console. Not sure if i will need the console speakers anymore, but there is already a hole, so i might as well keep them hooked up as well.
The budget went out the door when purchaced the speakers.. but i would like to keep it reasonable. since i already have an amp in the boat, that JL amp listed may do the trick.

There you go then just run the mx280 to the m8s and then look up the soencsnon the amp in the boat and see if it’s 4 ohm stable bridged for two channel and bridge it to the 6.5 kickers in the back then tune them separately.
Just gotta make sure either the Jl or the other amp or the head unit can feed to multiple amps

just put a small kenwood 600 marine amp ($100) on two kicker 8" wakeboard tower speakers 150w rms on my polaris ranger and they are sp loud, and crisp. Can literally hear it 2miles down the road if turned up
