I'm trying to identify the best way to backpack into a couple of public access ponds her in Oklahoma. The ponds are a ways from any parking area and the undulating terrain makes dragging in a sled somewhat difficult.

That in mind, I'm toying with the idea of buying a couple dozen of the collapsible decoys that have come out lately, but don't want to drop $200+ on something without some feedback. Has anyone on the OB used these?

For those unfamiliar, I'm referring to White Rock Nomad Series Floaters:

The Dakota Xtreme Packable Mallards:

And the Lucky Duck Deception Series:

They collapse down so bringing in more with less space is an option, and they typically weigh a lot less. For example, the WR Nomads are 4.5lbs/6 as opposed to their normal decoys which weigh 2x that.

So, any feedback you can give? Or other suggestions? I've seen the open bottom foam decoys and don't like them and have tried the true inflatable decoys from Cherokee Sports which are fragile and take a while to set up.

I had a couple dozen collapsible dekes many years ago. I figure technology is better now but I was unimpressed. The problem I had was that they would not retain the right shape when you needed to use them, especially when cold. I suppose if you store them in their normal shape, it would help, so I would advise that AT LEAST.

$200??!! Oh shite! Those damn things better look real nice.

I was talking about that for a couple dozen. Cant buy high end new decoys these days for less than $100/dz, hell sometimes they're $100/6.

Seems like wind would tip em over. Did you experience problems with that?

Look on aliexpress (Chinese eBay). They have duck decoys on there for $3-4. I’ve seen 6 for $20. Look pretty decent

Not sure on shipping times and cost but I’ve heard of hunters get them off that site

I purchased the dakotas from Rogers and I’m not impressed. They’re still bulky, sometimes don’t inflate on there own like theyre supposed to. But any small amount of wind makes em look so realistic.

I bought the white rock nomads last year for the exact purpose you are looking for, I would not recommend them. They collapse about as much as their advertisements show, but mine don’t expand nearly like they want you to think they do. The paint job is terrible on mine, and the collapsing/expanding causes the paint to come off. I spoke with white rock about the issues, they said that the lack of fully expanding is just something we have to live with when it comes to lightweight collapsible decoys. They said they would send me new decoys to resolve the paint issues, but the mail man must have lost them because they never made it to my door. You can still kill ducks with them for sure, but I was disappointed and would not recommend them for the price.

The best decoy I have found for the walk-in hunting was the old Cherokee Sports inflatable decoys. I used them in LA before I moved up to Oklahoma, and used them a lot last year up here. They weigh almost nothing and I can fit a dozen in a camo backpack with ease. 1-2 mile walks are a breeze with this setup. The only issue is that Cherokee Sports went out of business, but you can occasionally find them for sale on eBay.

People laugh at the look of the Cherokee inflatables, but I’ve killed a pile of ducks over them. They move in the slightest breeze and are more durable than you would guess. By far the best pack in decoy I’ve found, I hope mine last a long time

*just noticed you said you didn’t care for the inflatables. If you have some you don’t like, I’d trade you my white rocks for them

I dont like em but if I'm worse off with the WR, then I'll stick with the cherokees.

And did we correspond via email last year? I've been in OK for 4 years but with my son arriving november of last year I was probably pretty unresponsive.

I think you’d be better off with the inflatables for certain. Carrying any amount of the white rocks would still be bulky and fairly heavy compared to the inflatables.

Yes, we exchanged a few emails prior to/after me moving up here. That was about a year ago though. I’m in Tulsa.
