Mower will now charge battery when running. Motor basically runs off the battery til the battery dies. It’s a John Deere z225. Question is what do I need to change and is it something I can do it myself?

TIA

You can check all of your connections yourself. Make sure the lugs on the battery are shiny clean and all of the wiring connections are tight. Beyond that, if you have to ask, the answer is probably no you can't do it yourself.

I'm assuming you meant "NOT" instead of "NOW" charging the battery.

When you got this machine, did you not get a service manual or some other type manual with it with a "Troubleshooting" section??? If so, check what they recommend first to see if anything is amiss.

Like already mentioned, make sure the battery terminal connections are clean, and secured tightly on the posts.

I don't know what type charging system these machines have, so I can't comment on what to look for in that respect.

Possibly voltage regulator. See how many volts you're getting while running. If less than 12 probably alternator or regulator

It probably charges off of the flywheel. More than likely it is a bad regulator which is easy to change. What kind of engine is it?

You have a inline fuse that’s blown

Check all the wires coming off your battery for a black case in line fuse, pull out and change. You can do easily

First, alternators don't charge batteries; they only maintain charges. That's important bc you need to use a real battery charger if you want to charge it.

How old is the battery? If 2 or more years old, might just need a new battery. Mower batteries really need to be on a float charge during winter months.

Clean all connections. Do not use eye test. sand battery terminals and wire connectors to battery and to solenoid.

if your battery isn't sealed, you need to make sure it has enough water before you charge it.

After cleaning all connections, you can try some tests to check alternator if still not working properly. There are some simple ways that don't need any equipment. Google them.

I would disagree with that.
