I've killed a few that maybe were coming to a grunt. Had a bunch grunt back that I never saw.
Scent I know for sure has worked for me.
Best rut tactic I know of is yelling "STOP YOU BASTARD!" When they won't stop chasing a doe. Works every time, deer hate being called a bastard.

I literally can't count how many bucks I've had come to ticks 69.
My largest buck came to ticks and a doe bleat. 20 yards
Eta- I've had more luck with scent than I have a grunt/bleat. Less room for error I guess.
