I’ve never killed a deer using attractant and calls before
Posted by joeytiger on 1/2/18 at 8:22 pm10
All of my bucks have come by hunting certain conditions and moon phases. I’ve tried them all. Grunt calls, estrous bleets, rattling, doe pee, buck bombs, etc. Has anyone consistently been able to kill deer using calls and attractants?

I sprayed tinks 69 on a pipeline marker coming into the stand one morning and didn't see anything. Old guy killed a 4 point early that evening and said he wasn't going to shoot it but it stayed out fottin around too long, right by the marker.

I’ve grunted some of my best deer up, and have killed one deer that came straight in and stuck his nose in a mock scrape I made on the way to my stand. Timing is the biggest factor. If they are in full rut, they’re just very killable with any method, if not, hunt the wind and sit long hours...

I have rattled dozen of bucks this year, and brought in 4 bucks in a row with the can one morning. I Am scent king and it has worked about 10 times out of 200 lol

I’ve had them call back to the estrous bleet. Problem is, I feel like they’re just yelling back, “Fake!! frick off!”

My uncle has killed some nice very mature bucks getting them worked up with mock scraps etc and then waiting for the right weather and dragging old tarsel glands through the woods and hanging with some estrous
I’ve used all of the listed techniques and have had success with all. Don’t use scents anymore since they come from pen deer.
I really like to rattle on the ground and make a big racket. Break limbs, etc. Grunt, Snort, Wheeze can be deadly. While calling, remember that the bucks will try to get downwind. Set up where they have to show themselves if they are downwind. Have your back to a field or natural barrier.

Rattling absolutely works

I've never had luck with scents or grunts. But in all honesty, back then I didn't study up and learn when the best times were to do whatever. Now that I understand more of it, I still haven't went back to any of it. I still have my grunt call though.

In Illinois I consistently grunt and rattle deer in.

All of the decent bucks I have killed have been around the rut and I always have scent out in southern MO. Usually Code Blue doe estrous and buck pee. They have always seemed to key off of the scent. I usually put the doe estrous on a couple of trees about 50-75 yards from my shooting house, put the buck pee in a scrape nearby, and put some of the estrous gel directly below the windows on my shooting house (about 12 feet off of the ground). If anything, it makes them a little less cautious.
The eleven point I killed this year came out about 7:10 a.m. with his nose down, then would sniff the air, walked right to my shooting house, ignored a doe in another shooting lane 20 yards away, walked right to his scrape 10 yards from my shooting house and scraped it, rubbed a tree next to it (videoed it), then started walking right for a tree where I always put scent out.
Boom. Dead donkey.*
*Not OT Tatonka, but a good deer for where I hunt.

I flipped a can call once and had a coyote jump up and run directly for my stand. It was good enough to fool him.

I’ve killed a few bucks using hyper heat. Called in a few over the years using a can and grunt separately. Most of the time when grunting they circle down wind and lock up just out of sight then stay there and I can’t pull them out. Timing has everything to do with it. Also, grunt calls aren’t all that loud for the most part. If you don’t have one in hearing distance you don’t stand a shot. Rattling has never produced for me, a good friend I hunt with pulls them in though every now and then. Less is more when calling/rattling. Good luck.

Ive killed them using about everything. I made a mock scrape 2 years ago one afternoon. dropped some pee out of a doe we killed the previous day (saved bladder) in it and dropped some hyper heat on top of that. Used ever calm on the branches above it. Got in my stand around 2:30. at 5pm I layed the smack down on 135" 8pt. 3 years during the rut I had a drag covered in Tinks I pulled in one morning and by day break had 3 bucks all over that drag line. Ive killed them using a grunt in thickets, the bleat can, rattling every where from Texas to Tennessee. Its all about time of year. Another scent ive seen bring them out the woods to check it is Vanilla. Ive pulled many deer out the woods within 3 hrs of spraying vanilla on a bush
Very few times in my 30 years of trying, has rattling been successful, but I still use scents and grunts/bleats some times, especially during the rut.
Rattling success #1 - got invited to go with a friend that had a good buck scraping an area in the swamp. Got dumped off with a climber before daylight, and at 7:15 pulled out the horns and barely tickled them, like two young bucks pushing each other around. Grunted a few times, and then tickled the horns a little more. The buck must've been close, because before I got done with the second round, I noticed movement out of the corner of my eye. A 20" wide 8 pt. buck was standing in the edge of some brush with his head behind a huge pine. Laid the horns down, raised the rifle, and when he stepped from behind the tree, I could see that he was looking around for the noise. When he turned his head away from me, I shot him in the back of the neck. This was at 28 steps, and I'm convinced he came to the horns.
Rattling success #2 - Did a heavy rattling sequence in the thick swamp, and it sounded like a top exploded out in front of my stand. Figured I'd blown it, but the deer starting blowing, and made a big circle trying to get downwind, blowing every few seconds. Within a minute or two I noticed a buck walking all bristled up, like you see them do on tv. This was the only time I've ever witnessed that. He walked to a scrape and starting thrashing the brush above it. Shot him while he was working the scrape. This was the only time I've ever witnessed a buck work a scrape, and I think it was because of the rattling. Who knows?
I rattled several more times (probably 20-30) over the years with no success, and gave it up. Would love to try it in Texas or the Midwest, where you can see a lot farther.
I usually try to use scents, and will spray my boots and hang rags with Tinks 69 around my stand. A lot of times, does will blow at the scent, but bucks, although sometimes leary, will explore to check it out. A few years ago I hung a scent rag out of a box stand window, and within a few minutes after daylight heard grunting directly downwind. I knew I'd get busted, but the rut was about to start and I guess the doe piss was too much for him. Two bucks came out together, which was weird for the time of year. Killed an 18" 8 pt 45 yards directly downwind. Don't know which deer was grunting, but there was a smaller buck with him (4 or 6 pt).
I have used grunts and bleats with mixed success. I mostly only call now if I hear a deer blow and want to make it think another deer is in the area, or if they are moving away from me. This sometimes makes them stop or look for the other deer. I'll use a bleat late in the hunt if I'm about to leave, just to see if anything will respond. Hardly ever works, and I've quit just blind calling during a hunt.
TLDR: Rattling works very little for me in La., and I don't do it anymore.
Scents are hit or miss, but put the odds in your favor. It can't hurt to try and smell like a deer.
Calls are my last resort.
