Now, I am well aware that you boys would rather see fish, deer, ducks, boobies, etc. and don't really want to talk about flowers, plants, or gardens, but it does involve the outdoors so I thought I would post here. That, and 4lsu2 promised me an OB huggie if I hang out over here more.

So, we have this courtyard and my husband just dug up these two hideous tress/shrubs. He is thinking about planting some queen palms in their place, but it would rather plant about 2-4 big potted plants next to that area on the cement and just leave the grass area grass. The grass area is very small and our house and fence is right next to the area he wants to plant the palms. I just think it would be way too much tree in such a small area.

I know nothing about this subject--nothing. I'm sure I'm supposed to, being a woman and all, but I don't. I make a great sammich, and I keep my husband satisfied, but I just don't know anything about gardening.

So, here's my main question: if I find some of those big-huge planters I like, how do I go about planting something? Do I fill the whole damn thing with dirt? That seems like a lot and that it would end up waaaaaay too heavy. I think I've heard someone say to put styrofoam balls in there, but would that end up harming/killing the plant eventually?

I would love to have this little project done by the time my husband comes home from work today. I appreciate any help!

Got any pics of the area? That helps...

ETA, depending on the plant in the planter, the bottoms are normally filled with some kind of filler to fill the void. We have used old broken pots in the past, packing peanuts, etc...

There is a large seating area where I was standing taking the pic that is all cement. Plenty of room for some nice potted plants.

Is that a fence or a gate?

A gate on each side and fence. I know it's a tiny area. This is not our backyard. It's just a courtyard on the side. It's hard to explain.

Depends on if the plants root system will need it. Also, will you be moving them ever? My yard flooded one time and some of my pots did some traveling. Now, I fill the bottom with large rocks. It's weighs them down and helps with water drainage.

If the plants won't have large root systems and you're not worried about them getting washed away by a flood, empty plastic water bottles is a excellent space filler.

Not sure if serious but I did change it. I don't however need help with smoking weed. I mastered that in college.

So you need to keep room for both gates open? I wouldn't add any plants in that grass. Keep the grass, pave it, or concrete it. How about something like this? You will have to water often with them being on concrete...

Hell no...

You are going to have to look at the sunlight in that patio when you pick your plants...

Awesome!! Seriously though we mounted copper gutters to a fence like that before for planters, and it turned out real nice. Keeps them up off the ground, and not a whole lot of maintenance involved.

You could get one of those hibiscus trees and put potato vine under it...

Find yourself an old syle bathtub and plant some jasmine or wisteria in it. Looks pretty cool when in bloom. Oh..... and some boobie pics would be great too.

Well, if you're trying to grow hydroponically, I'd suggest you black out an extra bedroom and...oh wait, nevermind.
