like the title says, i need expert help with motor coming out of low speed idle (not staying where its set at)

in case someone doesnt know what i am talking about, new motors come with a slow idle feature now so you push in the key to make the computer reduce the idle speed from factory default setting to slower then that when you want to troll fish at slow walking speed with it. it reverts to "normal" idle speed anytime the rpms get over 1500 or something like that so you dont have to turn the slow idle off, it turns itself off as soon as the engine runs faster than 1500 rpms.

this is the first time this happened but i havent used the slow idle in a few months so im not sure when this started.

what is happening is, i push the key in twice to change to slowest idle speed and it beeps and goes into slow idle mode as it should, it stays set that way, as it should, but after something between 20-30 minutes of idling in gear this way, the engine decides, all on its own, to raise itself back up to the regular factory set idle speed, and it does this without receiving any form of driver input at all.

when i fish by slow trolling, it just idles as i steer, so i am not even touching the controls. when i tried to see what was going on with it, it doesnt seem to want to use any of the alternate idle speeds (it has 3 slower idle speeds) and it didnt "seem" to want to use any of them and it would only idle at the normal default idle speed unless i ran high rpms or turn the key off and back on in order to reset it, then, and only then, would it let me reset it back to low rpm idle again, which only lasted for a short time until it returns to normal idle and i have to repeat this.

this is a 2014 nissan 40hp 4 stroke engine that runs fine with no warning lights or codes flashing and it starts and runs perfect and smooth as silk and its not overheating.

i am guessing this must be a dirty sensor thing somewhere that needs cleaning or replacing, but i dont know how to to sort out or even where to look to solve this problem

thanks for any help you can give me.

20 to 30 minutes at the low idle speed is correct before it will default back to normal settings. Matter of fact any of the low idle speeds will only go for about 20-30 minutes. It also take into consideration engine heat at those speeds (low water psi for cooling). If its getting to hot it will default back to the higher idle speed to get more water flow up into the engine for cooling and thus will not go back into idle until a full key off reset. Those low idle speeds for extended times just isn't friendly for proper cooling. Hope this helps

no, according to the manual it says it stays where you put it forever until rpms rise to reset it or if you shut the motor off.

i have trolled with this motor on low idle for hours and hours when im trolling (literally 4-5 hours straight) and it stays where it is set at.

it puts out a good stream of water and doesnt run hot, but im sure its time for a new impeller. it does seem to act like the slow idle doesnt want to function again unless i turn off the key or take it for a quick run on plane once it goes back to normal idle speed, so maybe when its on slow idle its not getting enough cooling and thats whats going on.

thanks, i think you may have found my problem

agree change your impeller and you may be good to go. I have seen them fresh out the box do the same thing just because the low idle doesn't promote good heat transfer on the cooling system. Good Luck

well the impeller is 3 years old so its time any way

hope that is all it is, all this computer controlled shite is great until it doesnt work right lol

little follow up info here

talked to a dealer mechanic online about this and he said it could be a few things, overheating, bad ground connection, bad/low battery, or the ecm.

he feels it certainly wont hurt to descale the engine and put in a new impeller but he feels if its overheating on low idle it would show a warning code or temp alarm and it should also have a problem when running full speed since a "soft" or worn impeller will show a problem at full speed long before it causes a problem at idle.

he feels its most likely something screwy with the ecm

just figured i would add this extra info in case anyone else ever finds this post searching for answers to a similar issue they might be having.

i will come back to give a final report once the problem gets fixed
