Im looking for an offshore gps/fishfinder/radar combo. I have room for a 12" screen. Ive been looking at the simrad, garmin and hummingbird packages. trying to stay around the 3k mark for material.
Any one I need to stay away from? Any one I need to look into?
We do a lot of bottom fishing and some trolling 10-40 miles out of orange beach.
Thanks!

Garmin or Simrad.
Every boat I fish on has Garmins on them, but if I were buying something myself I would go with Simrad. Especially if you want to run CMOR maps. Garmin can't run CMOR but Simrad can, and they are nice for bottom fishing.

I'm a Lowrance guy so I say Simrad. I have 3 units on my boat that are networked, ethernet linked, HDI and structure scan. No issues since I installed them.

also thru hull or transom mount transducer? all the packages i see have a transom mount.

Just depends. Transom mount will be cheaper and easier to install, but won't perform as well or look as clean IMO.
Thru hull is the best way to do it, but is more expensive.

If you care about water temp, transom. If not, thru Hull.

Not true. Lowrance PDRT-WSU is the shoot thru with temp sensor.

Thru hulls give you water temp. You're thinking shoot thru hull. Not the same thing.
Thru hull = drill a hole in hull and transducer is flush with bottom of hull and directly exposed to water. Best quality and performance
Shoot thru hull - mounted in the hull and beam shoots through the fiber glass to read water. Not directly exposed to water, and isnt as powerful/clear as a true thru hull

I have a separate water temp gauge on the boat.

For lowrance I recommend the Airmar through hull for offshore. Night and day difference than a standard 2d fiver from lowrance
