Has anyone hunted this WMA south of airline hwy? Just by looking at some satellite images; it looks promising. I would just like to know the type of terrain I'm up against before I go scouting.

A bunch of our land boarders Maurepas WMA. Don't even try it without hip boots. It's pretty much all swamp, and some of it can get very nasty. If you're dedicated though, you can make your way to some of the high spots throughout the swamp, and usually you will find deer there. The thing is you'll need hip boots and a damn good set of lungs. Also, do not go out there without a compass and a good understanding of the map. Having a buddy with you is a good idea as well. If you kill a deer, you'll have your work cut out for you getting it out.

There are some nice deer back there. You'll just have to work to find them.

I grew up hunting the swamp. If you never have, I it's a different monster. I recommend you give it a try though. There's nothing more rewarding than busting a big swamp buck.

Its about the worse terrain you could imagine hunting in. Right now it is about as dry as it has been in years. A little rain will turn it into muck and get it back to normal. Most of the time you'll be walking balls-deep in water, with your foot sinking into the mud a few inches each step. Getting back there is hard as hell, but dragging a deer out is pure hell. You pretty much can't do it by yourself and good luck finding someone willing to help. The underwater cypress knees are a major pain in the arse as well. They'll trip you and your deer will get hung up on each one.

With all that said, I love hunting it. The quality of deer isn't near as nice as most places and they are scarce, but dammit I love being out there.

Oh yea, if it's warm, the cottonmouths will be out in full force. Watch every step very closely. They are mean little frickers.

Thanks for the info!! I have chest waders soo that is not a problem... I have a 16' bass tracker with a 70 ... Will this be too big for the blind river portion south of airline? I'm more interested in ducks....

Are you figuring on putting in at St. James boat club? If so, fitting under the railroad tracks is going to be an issue.

And the worst part is that it's 100% real. And it comes to our camp sometimes. It even comes in our camp sometimes.

Waders suck out there, unless you have the kind that you can tighten around the ankles. Hip boots are your best bet since they are snug to your ankle. Almost every step it feels like the mud is trying to pull your boot off.

There are a pile of wood ducks back there so you need to find a spot where they are flying low over. Not many big ducks anymore.

As for the boat, when the water is high it will be tough getting under the rr tracks by the boat club, and when its low you could get stuck and have your boat stranded for a few days. If you hit it just right you should be okay.

Yea, it's pretty nice little ride from there. I've only ever crossed under the railroad tracks coming from that way to blind river by the boat club launch

If they ever do that damn diversion that whole area back there is gonna be money for fishing.
