I feel like the majority of urban areas would die out pretty quickly. Those who were raised in rural areas and taught at least rudimentary survival skills could survive for quite awhile.

Cities would be mad max thunder dome quickly. Rural areas would be well defended with neighbors banded together. Only chance at long term survival is getting into the most rural parts of the country and most importantly being accepted if you are not from the area.
