Is it too late to use this for this year? I don't have a ton of weed problems, but there's some crabgrass and clover I'd like to get rid of.

Yes, most regions it's restricted right now because of cotton. But Triclopyr is an approved alternative

I think I may mow too short. I have my mower set to 1.5".
For St Augustine, that's way too short for gulf coast in my opinion. Longer blades of grass:
1. hold more moisture thus tolerate drought far better
2. chokes out other grasses and weeds.
3. makes it less susceptible to stress which in turn makes it more susceptible to fungus and other cooties.

Good stuff there. I don't use any fertilizer, though.

The only time I use any chemicals is if I've been gone for 6-8 months and let the yard go to hell (happens sometimes). When that happens, I cut it way down and apply this stuff.

By the end of the season, it's all back in shape.

Here's 2 yrs of zero fertilizers, just mowing at 4.25-inches.

It's a little rough looking right now due to rain (needs mowing & edging). But I have no weeds, fungus...nothing but soft St Aug.

Celsius takes care of crabgrass and unlike other post emergent selective herbicides for turf, it can be sprayed in most grasses without any damage.

Baking Soda sprinkled on the blades will kill it within two days.

I will definitely be trying that 25-0-5 next year during the spring. I am sure it is too late this year.

And I will raise the deck on the mower. Let me get this straight, you are setting your deck to 4" or is 4" the height of the grass after you cut it? I am sure it is supposed to be both but that's not always true. If I raise my deck to the 4" mark that sure does seem high and so does having 4" tall grass in my yard.

Actually, I've used that stuff midseason before and it worked great. Just do so before a moderate/light rain.

That's a really good question...I never thunk of dat.

Just went out with a tape measure. Seems my grass is actually being cut at about 3.25 inches. Glad you asked.

Now one thing that happens with cutting at a higher level, is that the grass will start to get "leggy" after a couple years, i.e. the stem portion gets long. Remedy is every second winter, to mow it down to 1.5 inches in the winter time. Then fresh long blades will appear in the spring. There will be a few weeds at first, but they'll get choked-out in a month.

Never too late to fertilize. Well, there's a point in late fall that it wouldn't pay but now is prime time. I just put out some more 33-0-0 between rains.

I read on here last year that you should start the season by mowing at the lowest setting, to get rid of the dead on the lawn and let new growth come in. Then raise it a notch every time you mow after that until you are mowing at a higher setting that you like. For my push mower, that is about 4 clicks up on the settings. It isn't all the way up, but I like the way it looked at that setting. It was longer, but not too tall after a mowing. And in the summer I pretty much have to mow every week anyways. It was the best my yard had looked in year. Before that, I was mowing at the lowest setting the first couple of times, then only up one notch after that. It is amazing what a little difference in mower height can do for the yard.

That's dead-on balls accurate, except I only do that low cutdown every 2nd year.

Dayum. I've never seen St Aug THAT green. Didn't even think it could get so dark green. Thought it was Bermuda then saw your comment about St Aug and why I asked.
