14.5' canoe and a crew cab truck with a 5.5' bed

I would haul with a bed extender, but not without. you want at least half the length of the canoe supported. Using BP's method of putting the back end of the canoe all the way in the corner, and loading the boat diagonally gives more support to the bottom than just the 5.5' bed. with the tailgate plus the additional diagonal space, you might just hit 8'. Don't forget the orange flag on the end sticking out.

I have probably just over half of my canoe sticking out of the bed of my truck. I can hold it in place well with tow straps no prob.

IMO half or less of the canoe hanging off the tailgate is no problem. I haul a 14' pirogue in a 6.5' bed pretty often with no problem. I put it at an angle across the bed, run one strap over the part against the cab and another through the spot to tie a rope on the side hanging off and to the tie down on that side of my bed. Keeps it pushed back against the cab and against that corner of the bed. I transport my 12' yak the same way. No problems.

I have a 5.5 foot bed and have carried 3 kayaks all over 12 ft one was 14 ft no problem. With the tailgate down it takes up about half of the kayak. Buddy of mine uses the extender with his 14' because of a toolbox and it works fine.

Alright, here's a physics/geometry question:

With that much boat hanging out back behind the back wheels, am I going to sideswipe cars/trees/grannies when I make turns? I'm trying to visualize if the boat will just follow me, or if it will swing way out to the side.
I don't think you'll have much tail swing.
