How far away can you hear most duck calls?

The "random calling" thread got me thinking about this past weekend hunting with a few buddies. One guy hates the normal female mallard call--he feels like everyone does it so for a lot of ducks (especially ones other than mallards) it's doing more harm than good. He likes to blow the mallard drake on a whistle or do a gray duck sound, etc. My counter was that I don't think ducks a few hundred yards away can hear those sounds. I know this depends somewhat on wind, but in general, what say the OB?

I blieve they here it farther than we think. Many times have herd the guy a few levees over in a rice field whistlin at pintails. I agree with you buddy on the off ducks beign leary of a mallard call. Down south i feel like a grey duck is going to respond or hes not, mostly doesn't matter which loose nut is on the end of the call. Mallards, different tale. I blow an old PS Olt and you can hear me at Boeuf when im at Russell Sage

okay, for argument's sake let's say you're in basically open water/marsh on a low-wind day. If the birds are too far to hear a mallard drake or gray duck, do you have any business calling at them to begin with?

If they too far to hear you on a mallard drake you can still reach them with a standard caller. For sure, may not work but twith the right call they can here you. Issue with calling long birds is with most calls to get loud you gotta let loose a long note with a lot of ring, haven't seen it work much in my time. Thats why theres a few calls out there that get LOUD with short notes and thats why I blow them. Mantain realistic noises
