Average depth of about 6 feet where they will be used.

The water is only 6 feet or you want your baits at six feet?

As short as you can still bring a fish in the boat. What I mean is if it's too short you won't have any "play" when you pick up the jug. Give yourself a little. I like mine about 30 inches.

People don't realize just how much catfish will feed on the surface too.

Less to roll up and still effective.

We usually just try a bunch of different lengths on the first run through and which ever lengths tend to be most effective we replace the others with more of the length that seemed to have worked the best.

If fishing in say, the Red River, what are the pros/cons of using multiple hooks per jug?

Pro's are def having more hooks in the water and you can try different bait at different depths.
Con's is rigging up all the hooks without the other hooks getting caught on something.

Mine are 50' long, but I fish them anywhere from 6' to 50'. My drops(hooks) are on clips that clip on the jug main line. At the bottom of the main line, I weight it with a 1 1/2 lb lead sinker.

I put anywhere from 2-3 hooks to as many as 20 per line.

Fishing them overnight, I catch more then 2-3 fish per line. I fish the Mississippi River and other back waters.

Those are drop lines, not jug lines.

Doing jugs on Red River up here in pool five the best we ever did was with them no more than a couple feet deep using big plastic coke bottles with glowsticks in them at night. You come up on the fish that can take a full sized coke bottle down and keep it down, you better get a gaff.

I've got 2.5 gallon containers so I doubt they can take that under. Thanks for the help, I can always trust the OB.

I do 18 to30 inches. Multiple hooks did not work for me. We caught plenty of fish but never got the massive not un done.

Slight spinoff: I live right by the levee and with the water being high I might go try to run jugs over the barrow pits. Has anyone tried this before?

Does current effect you or if they have trees between me and the actual normal banks of the river should I be okay?
