The Pearl River/Honey Island Shooting Range at Pearl River Wildlife Management Area (WMA) will re-open Friday (June 12) at 11 a.m., the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced.

Needed bridge repairs have been completed allowing access to the range through the cooperative efforts of LDWF, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and the Southeast Louisiana Firearms Safety Inc. (SELFS).

The range will be operating under Louisiana’s Phase-2 Covid-19 guidelines and restrictions until further notice. This may result in limited availability and users are asked to be patient, maintain their social distance and abide by all range safety officer directions.

For more information, go to https://www.honeyisland.org.

Man, we have over 150 guys in our organization. I've been a part of it since 2013 and there's still some guys I've never met. Our minimum obligation to the organization is to work at least one shift per month. That's about all I have the time for but I'm also now a training officer withing the organization and since Jan of 19 I'm on the board of directors...

Unfortunately, I still couldn't tell you who "bear" is... Although I have a few guys in mind since they fit that description... Pepperidge being one of them!

Man I went out today with my wife and I don’t think I’ll be going back for a while. We got there around 8am and went straight to the pistol line. I had my wagon with me because I had lots of stuff to sight in, plus it has been a while since I’ve been.

We stayed at the pistol line for about an hour and a half. Then asked if we could go to the rifle. It was getting busy so the range officer asked for us to go back to the main station instead of going straight to the rifle line. No big deal.

We got back to the main station and they hand me a pad where I can write my name/number and he said go wait in your vehicle. He said he would call me when a spot was available.

I guess my fault for not knowing the new corona rules, but I had a wagon full of stuff and was not about to bring it back to my car, just to drag it out again. So I just called it a day. Kind of disappointing since it’s been so long and I spent a lot of time getting everything packed to go there.

If y’all are thinking about going, don’t bring a lot, and prepare to get there early.

Sorry about the unpleasant experience. I worked Saturday and it was never busy enough for us to have to use the waiting list but unfortunately, that is how we have to do it when the range gets to capacity until the next phase of Covid reopening starts.

Are you ever available to go out there on a weekday? If so, let me know and I'll be happy to take you out there and you'll have the range all to yourself unless any other range officers decide to go out that day. That's our #1 perk of being a volunteer in the organization. We can go on weekdays when it's closed to the public.

Email me at CDANIEL985@GMAIL.COM if you want to talk more about going out there.

Went this morning as well. Got there at 9-9:30 and waited for a stall for about 20 min which wasn't a big deal. They were very organized and communicated with both areas via megaphone. We had a great time shooting our new guns.

No need to be sorry. Like I said my fault for not understanding the rules. And I guess I should have hit the rifle range first but the pistol range is what normally gets busiest first. I assume everyone is out shooting their new AR’s.

Thanks for the offer. Unfortunately I work 8-5 every week. And I work in Metairie so it’s even more difficult. Otherwise, I would consider becoming a volunteer myself for that perk alone.

Well please don't give up on us. We're all having to deal with these social distancing guidelines but once all these restrictions are lifted we'll be back to normal operations. That doesn't meant we won't have wait lists any time in the future. It happens quite often, especially as the weather gets a little cooler and the hunters start coming out to sight in their rifles before hunting seasons. But hopefully by then we won't have to require yall to stay in the parking lot.

Keep my email address that I posted above and please let me know next time you come out. I know it's only $6.00 to get in but I'd like to take care of your entry fee with a pass and give you a few extra passes to use whenever you'd like.

That's pretty much exactly right. I went out there Friday just for a couple hours to see how everything was going on our first day reopening and then I worked my shift Saturday. There were a LOT of 1st time shooters and shooters with new "toys" putting them through their paces.

The pistol line is really the only line we were concerned about since it's the only one we have to worry about people keeping their spacing since the lanes are within 6ft of each other. Our benches on the rifle line are more than 6ft apart so we don't have to "skip a bench" to keep proper spacing like we do at the pistol line. But the rifle line sure was the one to fill up quickest all weekend.
