Home made duck call question.

So long story short, I have two calls that were homemade given to me by an older guy I knew from hunting back when I was at LSU that were made by a guy near where I grew up (he got them from some corporate hunt), and I love them. It looks and sounds like Cypress but I'm only like 80% sure that is what they are made of and like I said I have two but one I put the other up at my parents on the mantle because it matches a call on a really old DU or some painting my dad has that he has with a matching handmade woody decoy in the painting.
However this call is starting to splinter on the outside from wet hunts, is there anything that any of you redneck ingenuity baws can think of that you could seal it with. Just on the outside. I don't want completely ruin it so I'd let it wear out before putting something on it that would ruin it, but I couldn't find much info online.

A good finish to waterproof wood products is to dilute 1 part 2 ton epoxy ( not 5 minute type!) in about 4 parts acetone. Do it in a glass bottle. Wipe on with a foam brush. Takes a while to dry but makes durable glossy finish.
You can make a thicker coat diluting less, like 3/1, but doing 4/5 to 1 is easier to wipe on. Just add coats until you get the thickness you want. I’d think it would seal up to fraying pretty well.

Super glue, believe it or not, is a very good sealant and what a lot of turners use.
ETA: put a little on a paper towel and rub it over the call. Repeat doing that until it’s covered.

shite I dont have a pic at the moment, I left everything out to dry at my parents since I hunt there. It looks like it was made and carved by someone who does like special carvings and seals it, yet they just left it basic smooth wood to give out or something I ll try to find a picture of a similar one.
Super glue isnt a terrible idea. the inside is fine, I just noticed the outside getting prickly and soggy.

Oh, I understood that it’s split. I’d sand it, let it dry for a few months and put a few coats of spar varnis on it. Or you can apply multiple coats of linseed oil maybe?? I would not put varnish on the tone board.
Edit and as I understand the “CA”/super glue finish is a high pressure operation which “stabilizes” any wood to which it is applied basically making the wood a plastic and removes most if not all of the shrink/swell characteristics iof wood. Idk if rubbing super glue on it would work?

My dad has an old call made of roseau cane that is over 100 years old. He has it wrapped with freezer tape.

Sorry I explained it poorly. Sanding it and putting some spar varnis or something similar is probably the best idea. Like I said I have two identical one but my dad now all of a sudden thinks its his decoration because it matches one of the call in a painting and carved decoy combo from way way back.

Why do you think it's a high pressure operation?
I've made duck calls and I put superglue on them.
It absolutely works.

I understand the material used to stabilize wood is basically superglue. Stabilization and finishing with super glue are different techniques that use the same/similar material.

If you have to stabilize wood, it's probably spalted.
a few coats of super glue won't need to have anything done to it.

Thanks for going back and forth on that. That actually helped. It was between two guys who are both dead who could have made them and I the closest lead I can find was a buddy who thought it was an Arkansas style maple call. I was half asleep when I said Cypress or something. Either way not a huge deal just has a good sound that sounds different than my other calls and buddies calls. If it goes out it goes out though. I think I will try superglue

All you want to do is put a drop on a small piece of paper towel and rub it on the call.
Toss that one and get another
Repeat that until you have the call covered.

The superglue finish works great if you have a lathe to spin the call while applying it. I basically put gobs on and then sand/polish to 12000 grit to get the superglue glass clear. It’s waterproof at that point.

Yeah, I could find one but if I can't in the meantime ill just redneck it. I just dont wanna mess with the inside, its really just the outside and trying to make it last longer. Im sure eventually I'll switch it out for the other identical one and they'll both be retired, but I told my self during the split I am going to actually fix things up that have needed fixing.
