I am not the outdoorsman that many here are. I have had guns all my life but I am more of casual gun owner that has done plenty of hunting in the past but not so much in the last 10 years or so.

Home built .223 (I bought from the builder, I didn't build it)....so if you ask me details about the rifle I won't be able to tell you much.

recs for optics? I am not looking for top of the line. reliable/serviceable.

Thx

I've got a couple Swampfoxes. I like 'em so far.

I’d imagine it depends on what you want to shoot with it right?

I’m basically in the same boat and trying to figure that out as well.

ETA: I’m very interested in a Sig red dot/flip up magnifier combo. Do those actually work or are they mostly a gimic?

You can get a Holosun for a few hundred dollars. I’ve got a 510c, just haven’t mounted it yet. I like my eotech too.

Does it have sights on it? Really, they are pretty damn good.

For 30 years, all I had on my AR were iron sights, and killed a crapload of varmints with it. Finally a few years ago I found a mount that I liked ( that rifle has the integral carrying handle). The mount attaches through the hole in the carrying handle and can be removed and replaced without having to re-sight anything and doesn't affect the sights. I just install the scope and mount if I think I will need to shoot out past 300 yards, and remove them when I am done.

This is the key in my opinion. Iron sights or flip up sights are good for most applications. However, if you have “older” eyes, the red dot style or traditional scope are nice.

Have Holosun 503G on a few ARs that I use for under 300 yds. Love the ACSS reticle and the “shake awake” feature. They are great for quick acquisition and have adjustable brightness. On one AR I have a flip up 3x magnifier that gives added ability.

On my 6.5 Grendel I have a Primary Arms SLx3.5 4-14X44mm FFP Rifle Scope - Illuminated R-Grid 2B Reticle. Illumination provides quick access but it is a traditional scope so you have to be down on the gun. Definitely more long range optic and I am pleased with it on that rifle.

Good luck!
