I’m guessing 2.5 years old, and we have always guessed 2.5 for deers this size. Checking to see if we have been off base

Our deer are dropped in early summer. So it has to be 2.5 or 3.5

That pic is from 11/29

Yeah, I don’t do the half years.

What parish? I’m on my phone, but that looks like pine trees.

Union. We have pine but plenty of hardwoods too. We have killed deer at 200 lbs before. Multiple 180 plus

Y’all are killing be with 3

This deer was either born summer 2021 or summer 2020

So y’all are saying 2020 born or 2021 born?

I’m not worrying with your math problem. It’s a three year old deer. Add the half if you like.

Is the first buck a shooter for y’all? It’d be interesting to see what he could become.

Thats the question going forward

We have killed a ton like him, thinking before he was a 3.5 year old deer. But I just think those deer are younger than we think based on how big they actually get

We aren’t trying to trophy hunt, as we don’t have enough time. But we always felt comfortable taking out three year old bucks(knowing how hard it is to kill them once they get any older than that)

I’m just wondering if we have been killing younger deer maybe than we thought

But for the big deer pictured, we are realistic and know we don’t put in the time to kill old men like him without pure luck

If you target 3 and up, you’ll high grade your best 2 year olds in the process.

Going to 4 and up will save the 2 year olds, but likely mean less bucks being killed and more members being disappointed in the season because they didn’t kill a buck.

If you truly want to know the age, kill one and send the front teeth to any one of several labs that conclusively age the deer based on rings in the teeth, similar to aging a tree. Anything else, including tooth wear, is a guess. The cost is about $50 per test

I was in a club one year where we guessed the age on the hoof, then again by tooth wear then finally by lab test and compared the results. Therefore all of my age estimates are based on what I learned from that. Based on a good photo I will normally be pretty accurate or possibly Miss by one year.

Yep, that’s the thing

No members, just family. We know if we target 4 and up we will go years upon years of nothing. All have young kids for now and don’t put the time in to kill those guys right now.

I hear you, but if the deer in the op is 4.5 that bruiser we have is 6.5 plus which I just don’t know if that’s possible around us
