I gave mine trifexis and it sucked at keeping fleas and ticks off. Switched back to comfortis.
2 of my dogs dont get heart medicine regularly. Over 10 yrs of dog life combined and they have not had any problems.
I have 2 labs and a mastiff.
My newest lab is a little over a year old and is being kept up on all the medicines in case I want to breed him. He has been to the vet more than the other 2 combined. Mostly cause he is accident prone though.

Just FYI this is Mrs. 7flat and I was reading thru the posts so I had to add what I know.
Being a vet student I hear all about these issues, but the trouble with Heartguard is this:
1. The pill must be given EVERY 30 days, not once a month. So giving it Jan 1st then again Feb 15 you will have a heartworm positive dog
2. The pill has to broken up into little pieces to allow increased surface area therefore increased dosage of ivermectin. Usually ppl just give it whole.
There have been reportings of resistance to the Heartgurad as well as other heartworm preventatives.
The drug with the least amount of resistance as of right now is Moxidectin... so Advantage Multi works well and Proheart(shot every 6 months)
I personally use Proheart for heartworms and Frontline or Advantix for the flea/tick preventative.

Been giving my labs Heartguard since I've had them. Going on 2x now for the male being heartworm positive. Was religious about giving them the pills every 30. Messed the 30 day window twice 2 years ago and sure enough he came up positive. Went through the containment treatment, which was hell for a lab puppy. Haven't missed a treatment since, and he tested positive again two months ago. It was then that the vet told me about the issues people are having with heartguard
.
For those that are using Ivermectin, is it a pill or shot? I just looked on the tractor supply website(closest thing to a feed store by me) and it only shows it in the injectible form.

After 3 labs and no heart worm preventative, only one had heart worms, once. Got treated, lived 3 more years heart worm free (died of something else).
I think you're fine not going exactly 30 days every time, unless you just have shitty luck.

Just be glad none of you have white pawed Aussie/Border collies...slim possibility that ivermectin can kill them, so I always have to be careful with what mine gets.

Genetic marker that signals a deficiency in some enzyme or something that regulates the blood brain barrier...lets certain stuff pass in that shouldn't. loperamide (Immodium) and ivermectin are two of the most lethal.

The white paws are an indication that they have it?

Listerine? How does this work?
Buy you a squirt bottle & fill it with Listerine.
Spray all around dog pens, carports & whereever you want to & i'll keep them bitches away. When they show back up spray again. It works.
