Should you already have your business license before apply for the ffl? Or is the ffl the actual business license? And what about business insurance? If you sell from your home, would I just tell my insurance company to tack on a business policy to my home insurance? What else should I need before applying for the ffl?

Lots of great questions and information in here.

Just today I was wondering about what it takes to become a FFL and did a little Googling. If I did this it would be out of my home as a hobby and maybe try to combine it as an offered service along with Conceal Carry and Basic Firearms Safety classes. I'm taking the BIT course as well as the NRA Chief Range Safety Officer course next month. Might turn it into a hobby/side business.

This just depends on your local laws, you need to be legit before you apply. So, if you want to do it from home, make sure your HOA/city/parish/county allows walk in traffic type home businesses or doesn't have some type of rule against home FFLs, if your city/parish/county requires a business license then you will need that beforehand, maybe need handicapped parking, maybe need public restroom, etc. etc. So, just find out what you need to be a legit sole prop, LLC or Corp in your area. As for insurance, unless your local laws require it, you would not need it. You need to contact your insurance agent about adding coverage for inventory if you want to do that. One thing to consider about doing it out of your house is that it becomes a potential target for burglary while everyone knows you're at work, or more importantly, robbery while you and/or family, if you have one, are there. You're going to be selling guns to strangers, and hopefully a lot of them if you want to make any kind of money. There's going to be a good bit of them that are sketchy AF, such is the business, so just something to consider. I would suggest looking for a small cheap office or if you must use your house thinking about a serious plan for how transactions are going to happen, where exactly they ate going to happen within your house, limiting the amount of the inside someone can see during a transaction, how you're going to store, display and secure or deter thoughts of theft of your inventory, and amping up your security measures all around...cameras are great but they don't stop anything or identify strangers.

Yea I knew one guy who made a little 8x12 section in his garage and that was his area to sell guns etc. another guy literally just let me walk into his house and sit at his dining room table to do the paperwork while his wife and kids sat on the couch. I definitely would not ever let random arse people into my home. The garage setup was way better imo
