You should have just taken a pic, done measurements, got a replica made, and let him go. Too nice of a deer for you to kill and not let him spread his genes. The smaller ones taste better anyway.

Is that your best Poopsonsaban schtick?

NICE trophy! I like the way he posed the ears, too. Good swell on the neck. Used to be a taxidermist myself. Would love to see a closeup detail of the nose/nostril and eyes.

I was very impressed with the eyes. The detail around the tear ducts is amazing. Going to check out the nostrils now.

I have to imagine this is the downfall of being a taxidermist.

I immediately wondered which one it was when I saw the thread.

You gonna mount both of them on the same wall?

I checked on my coyote the first of the week and he said he still had 60 deer to do before he got body mounts.

They probably start getting flooded with calls about this time of year.

Yeah one is slightly looking left and the other looking to the right. Hopefully they will be looking to the center of the grand room in my lodge. Also known as the living room in a house trailer

Regular and repeat customers understand. New customers or "first time mounts" want it back yesterday. They don't understand that they are not the only ones waiting. And they don't understand the steps and the time required in producing a great mount. And they don't understand how much room is required to mount deer heads. Imagine having at least two dozen shoulder mounts in various stages of completion hanging around your work area. If you've got a large shop, then, no problem. A lot of taxidermists don't have that much room, though. And when mounts are wet and drying out, you hafta check em OFTEN, sometimes hourly, and make sure eyes, nose, ears, etc. are drying correctly with the correct posture. I've set my clock many times to get up in the middle of the night to check on and adjust eyes, nose, and ears.

KR, I retired from the taxidermy business about ten years ago when we gained full custody and guardianship of two of our granddaughters. I went from mounting deer and fish to changing diapers and feeding babies in the span of 24 hours. They were both in diapers and one wasn't even a year old. My shop was in a double wide trailer that I converted to taxidermy. I intend to get back into it after these girls get older and don't require as much of my time and attention. My shop was in Southwest Virginia, though.

I picked up a road kill red fox last week and put in the freezer.
Ive been wanting to try taxidermy for a while now and was always told cats and foxes were the hardest.
Ilike a challenge so Im starting with something hard. I want to do a bobcat first but havent killed or found one yet

Don't start with a bobcat! Cats are a whole different critter. Remember the thread from last year or year before last with the bad bobcat mounts? Cat hair is NOTHING like coyote, fox, deer, or squirrel hair. And the facial muscles, eyes, and ears HAVE to be anatomically correct. I'd start with a fox squirrel or cat squirrel. Easy to skin, preserve, and pose and they are great experience builders with minimal expense. Good luck with whatever you try, though! Whatever you decide to do, though, remember this: ALL that meat has to come off that hide, even down to the knuckles on any critter. Go to WASCO and order their catalog before you try your first mount. Lots of great instructional videos there and all the supplies you need. And there are many, many other excellent taxidermy sites as well! LINK
