How do I tell if the power head has been over heated?

Just found this
Eta: I am not an expert either. Just connecting random dots. I've worked on mostly air cooled engines, and car engines. Only been inside maybe 10 boat motors
quote:That is what I was alluding to when you said it had been run in the oil spill. Dunno if it was run in suspended oil, or just floating oil
My first move would be to pull all the spark plugs and do a compression test. Do this using the standard ratio of premix. Adding extra oil won't "fix" anything.
Note, when you remove the old plugs, look for evidence of melted aluminum adhered to the electrodes. This is a bad thing.
Two-strokes are simple creatures. If the compression meets minimum spec and you don't see and melted aluminum, then put in new plugs and keep using the engine.
Since you rely on this engine daily, if the compression is inadequate or irregular, my opinion is that you should inspect/resurface the cylinders, and install new pistons, rings, wristpin bearings and gaskets.
If you wind up rebuiling the top-end, also inspect/rebuild the cooling system.
